Last week, StopPress met with an estimable judging panel in an effort to determine which finalist in the StopPress/MediaWorks TVC of the Year competition was most deserving of this year’s title. Copious head scratching, contemplative groans and a fair bit of imbibing ensued as the judges weighed up the pros and cons of the campaigns over a lunch at Auckland’s Neighbourhood brew bar. And by the end of this highly scientific estimation of the effectiveness of the each campaign, the judges came to a final shortlist of three candidates: ‘Mistakes’ for the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) by Clemenger BBDO, ‘Devil’s Chair’ for NZI by FCB and ‘The People’s Film’ for VW by Colenso BBDO. PLUS: ‘Blazed As’ for the NZTA by Clemenger BBDO and ‘Born to Defy’ for Steinlager by DDB took out the top spots in the craft category.
As part of our series dedicated to celebrating good work and inspiring a bit more generosity, Nick Worthington, Colenso BBDO’s creative chairman, gives some props to two great campaigns and one burgeoning brand.
Two of New Zealand’s four shortlisted entries picked up gongs in the film category at Cannes, with Clemenger BBDO’s ‘Mistakes’ winning a gold lion and DDB’s ‘Be the Artist’ winning a bronze.

Remember the slightly creepy corporate robot ad in 2011 for Visa Paywave? It almost made cash look cool. But in April this year the marketing changed tack with a sepia-coloured, quirky fantasy world made of skate bowls and skater girls and boys. It made contactless Paywave cards look so smooth the ad took out the Colmar Brunton Ad Impact Award for April.
On 9 May, about three weeks after the finalists were first announced, the One Show awards were handed out, and the results were somewhat underwhelming for the Kiwi agencies originally shortlisted. Of the 18 awards that the Kiwi contingent could’ve won, only four resulted in silverware, with Clemenger BBDO, Colenso BBDO/Proximity and Shine picking up gongs.
The finalists for the 41st edition of the annual One Show Awards, regarded as one of the most prestigious in the world, have been announced, and Kiwi agencies have been acknowledged as finalists in 20 of the categories listed. This year, the show received almost 22,000 entries from 63 countries, and these were then whittled down to 1,229 finalists (from 463 agencies) by a panel of international judges. Each of these finalists will now have to wait until 9 May, when the winners will be announced during a ceremony at Lincoln Centre in New York City. As was the case last year, Clemenger and Colenso received the most nominations among the Kiwi agencies.
Rather than following Clemenger’s lead by taking the gently, gently approach, The Tombras Group has instead created an ad for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the States that wouldn’t be out of place in the 72nd sequel of the Final Destination franchise.
Mistubishi has just launched New Zealand’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. But, rather than trying to explain the complex technology in the new Outlander, Clemenger BBDO and Curious have kept it simple. Plus: lots more brmm-brmms and a new automotive sponsorship.
Every year, TED compiles a list of its top ten ads worth spreading. And NZTA, Clemenger BBDO and Finch’s ‘Mistakes’ ad, which shows a conversation between two men without enough time to react to a life-changing accident, has made it onto 2014’s list.
Last night’s Axis Awards, hosted by Newstalk ZB’s Andrew Dickens at the Viaduct events centre, delivered a plush showcase of the country’s best creative talent for the 34th year in a row. The theme for this year’s edition was ‘share the love,’ and this was certainly a sentiment that all 800 people in attendance embraced as smiles around the room were as ubiquitous as celebratory drinks. Here’s a rundown of how the event went.
One big hit from NZTA and Clemenger BBDO, another big hit from Old Spice and Kiwi Steve Ayson, a curious child calls Christmas into question in a spot for ze Germans by Mark & Louis, and a collection of oddvertising for Carlton Dry from Taika Waititi.
Clemenger BBDO has once again delivered for the New Zealand Transport Agency with a new ad that targets drivers who think it’s safe to exceed the speed limit by only a few kilometres per hour.
Boy director Taika Waititi has worked some magic of late for Steinlager Pure and the New Zealand Transport Agency. Now his new series for Carlton Dry shows the scary possibilities when you get male flatmates and their beer together.
The bar for call for entries campaigns has risen significantly in recent years, with the likes of DraftFCB’s ‘The real judge of advertising is the consumer’ campaign for the 2011 Effies and TBWA\’s ‘Results Don’t Lie’ effort this year standing out. And there are a couple more good ones bubbling away at the moment for the Axis Awards and the newly rejigged Beacon Awards.
KiwiRail Freight and KiwiRail Scenic have released television commercials in an effort to remind Kiwis that rail is still relevant and enjoyable. Auckland-based agency Hot Mustard took charge of the Freight campaign, while Wellington-based Clemenger BBDO held the reins at KiwiRail Scenic Journeys.
Bell Tea’s historic arm-related journey, H Brothers keeps it cool, Kiwirail heads for the country, Lotto honours the chilly bin for summer and the Axis Awards shares the love.
When Axis set out to stage a more collegial and celebratory awards show this year, it might not have imagined agencies cosied in warm embrace over each other’s work, nor its trophy moving in for a fleeting kiss with a doppelganger. But as this year’s awards open for business, Clemenger BBDO has paired off the big guns and asked them to love each other as only agencies can.
The new book Promoting Prosperity, which takes a look at New Zealand’s early commercial artists and the beginnings of the country’s entrepreneurial and creative roots, tells us about today as much as yesterday, says Clemenger BBDO’s Andrew Holt.
Back when I was a young lad, I went to the supermarket with a couple of my older cousins. They kept throwing jars at me. And I, of course, kept catching them. When I tried to retaliate and threw a jar back at them they, of course, moved aside and left it to smash on the ground, leaving me to deal with an angry manager. So you can imagine the painful memories that came flooding back after seeing NZTA and Clemenger BBDO’s latest anti-drink driving ads, which show a good—although slightly wasteful—way for responsible chaps to say no to another beersie from their mates.
Five good’uns this week, with ukuleles, emoticons, family time, song rash and Rotorua making the cut.
