Last night, laptops across the magazine industry were closed a little earlier than usual as journalists, publishers, editors and sales people headed to Shed 10 to attend the 2015 Magazine Media Awards to celebrate another year of storytelling across print and online. 44 awards were handed out over the course of the event, and it was a particularly good night for NZ Life & Leisure and StopPress/NZ Marketing’s Ben Fahy.
A timelapse video of luminescent glow worms, delicate frost crystals, a blue shark emerging from the water and a jellyfish the size of a dinner plate are among the 28 finalists of the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year, selected from a whopping 5,800 entries.
It would be fair to that the Kiwi brand is somewhat synonymous with the colour black (or shade if you want to be pedantic). Not only do Kiwis have a penchant for donning black clothing (and other dark hues), with several online articles devoted to the fact, our national sports teams also rock it. The announcement of the finalists of this year’s Best Design Awards revealed a familiar thread – Kiwi graphic designers who work magic with the beloved hue.
From the moment Vodafone’s Piggy Sue stepped in to replace James Rolleston for Vodafone, there was a sense that the ad would be popular. It did, after all, feature an adorable piglet that was remarkably puppy-like in its behaviour. And so it has proven, with the ad racking up over 300,000 views online and also getting the most votes in the People’s Choice division in this year’s MediaWorks/StopPress TVC of the Year competition. Finalists for the 2015 TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Awards have been announced after marketers were invited in April to submit their best initiatives that represent the full scope of marketing.
While you’d be hard-pressed to find an advertising creative openly disappointed at winning a gold, silver or even bronze Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the grand prix awards are the ones that they all want. These elusive gongs are perhaps the most coveted perhaps in any advertising competition around the world, and winners over the preceding decades now stand as a veritable advertising canon, giving modern creatives the opportunity to take their place alongside the greats who came before. And as the festival’s days roll on, 2015’s generation of grand prix winners will simultaneously take their positions in the canon as they walk onto the stage at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes to collect their awards. Colenso found itself among the winners at Cannes again overnight, picking up a pair of silvers in the Radio categoy for the ‘Lottery’ and ‘Whack job’ spots produced for Mars.
Each day in Cannes brings fresh batch of awards winners—and inevitable rosé-induced hangovers—as gongs in the various categories are distributed to the agencies that have over the course of the last year produced the best creative efforts. And this continued overnight as the winners in the Outdoor, PR, Media, Creative Effectiveness and Glass Lions categories were announced. This time, Colenso, DDB and FCB were among the winners.
Results for the Promo and Activation, Direct, Press, and Mobile Lions categories came out overnight, and there a few Kiwi winners in the mix. The New Zealand contingent picked up gongs in each of the categories listed, but the only Kiwi gold came in the Press category for Colenso BBDO’s ‘Breast Cream’ campaign developed for Skinfoods and the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.
The top honour at the Facebook Awards is the Blue Award and this year it went to Leo Burnett and Procter & Gamble for the thought-provoking ‘Like a Girl’ campaign produced for the Always brand (it also won a gold award). And the Blue for Good Award (which recognises campaigns created for charitable or not-for-profit organisations) went to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a campaign that Facebook says placed only second to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in terms of how many people it reached (it also raised $220 million dollars for the cause). At this year’s edition of the Canon Media Awards, The Herald took out both of the key traditional print awards by winning the Newspaper of the Year and the Best Daily Newspaper (over 30,000 circulation). And at a time when the digital is becoming increasingly important, the NZME-owned publication also took out the Best Website award. PLUS: Northland Age editor Peter Jackson wins over the audience.
Yesterday, at the Radio Rewired conference hosted in Auckland, the industry announced that Colenso BBDO’s ‘K9FM’ campaign for Pedigree had won the Grande Orca for 2015. And the creative team at Colenso received additional good news overnight in that the campaign has also picked up a coveted black pencil at the D&AD Awards (it also won a yellow pencil).

Colenso BBDO has won two Webby Awards, which the agency will scoop up during the ceremony in New York next month. One Webby was for the Best Use of Online Media for its Burger King ‘Anti Pre-Roll’ campaign while the other was a ‘People’s Voice’ award in the Best Use of Social Media category for ‘Motel BK’.

After a year of judging new brand ads in New Zealand, Colmar Brunton has announced that Vodafone and FCB’s festive ad ‘Dinner for two’ has taken out the award for 2014’s Most Impactful Ad, with Samsung’s G5 Days and Nestle Purina’s ‘Herding Cats’ also claiming big fist trophies for the most persuasive and most enjoyable awards respectively.
Over 900 ridiculously well-dressed media types took their seats at the Viaduct Events Centre last night for the 2015 edition of the Beacon Awards. Throughout the evening, each of the company tables gave partisan cheers when their co-workers stepped onto the stage to collect awards, serving as a reminder of the competitive banter that typifies the industry on a daily basis.
