Cannes day one: Colenso picks up gongs across all categories, DDB and Y&R also among winners

Results for the Promo and Activation, Direct, Press, and Mobile Lions categories came out overnight, and there a few Kiwi winners in the mix. The New Zealand contingent picked up gongs in each of the categories listed, but the only Kiwi gold came in the Press category for Colenso BBDO’s ‘cream that gives you wrinkles’ campaign developed for Skinfoods and the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.

In addition to the gold Lion, Colenso also won a bronze for the Volkswagen Speed Dial campaign, which saw kids design custom-made speedometers for their parents’ cars.

The Press category saw 79 Lions awarded over the course of the event, and Colenso wasn’t the only Kiwi agency to find its name among the winners, with Y&R NZ also picking up three bronze lions for the Schick ‘What Emma/Kate/Sarah sees’ campaigns.

Fresh from picking up New Zealand’s first ever Black Pencil at the D&AD Awards, Colenso’s K9FM campaign for Pedigree picked up a silver lion in the Promo and Activation category (this campaign also picked up a bronze gong in this category). And the agency also added to its VW haul by picking up another silver for the ‘speed dial’ campaign.

The only other Kiwi agency to be included among the winners in this category was DDB, which won a bronze Lion for the the Reverse April Fools’ stunt orchestrated for BMW.

Colenso carried its form across to the mobile category, which this year saw only 57 gongs awarded from an entry pool of 1,246, winning silver and bronze gongs for Pedigree’s ‘Found’ app. And while these were the only two gongs in the category awarded for work created by Kiwi agencies, Tourism New Zealand was also among the winners for the NZ Dronie campaign, which was developed by WhybinTBWA Sydney.

There were no golds or silvers for Kiwi agencies in the direct category, but Colenso did wave the Kiwi flag, picking up two bronze Lions for the BNZ ‘shred’ campaign and one for Mars’ ‘K9FM’.

According to a Cannes Lions release, this year’s edition of the annual ceremony has seen a record number of attendees with 13,500 pass-holder descending on Cannes to attend the awards ceremonies and to see the panel of speakers, which has already included Tinder founder and president Sean Rad, Dazed’s Jefferson Hack and Samantha Morton and Marilyn Manson.

Here’s the full list of winners from these four categories:
