According to the latest MYOB Business Monitor, 80 percent of Kiwis use the internet to research products and services, so it’s slightly surprising—especially for many in this sector who are battling with the seemingly unrelenting march of technology on the world of marketing and communications—that only 32 percent of New Zealand businesses have a company website. But Westpac and MYOB are aiming to change that with an initiative called getonline.co.nz, and it’s likely to be one of the last major campaigns created for the bank by the Clemenger Group before it heads across to DDB.

The One Club’s Creative Week in New York has come to an end, and the world’s best creative advertising ideas have been acknowledged. But it was fairly slim pickings for the Kiwi contenders, with Colenso BBDO winning a rare Gold Pencil for the Levi’s ‘Rear View Girls’ web film at One Show Interactive and Publicis Mojo taking a Silver Pencil for the Greenpeace ‘Oil on Canvas’ campaign in the integrated branding – public service campaign category at The One Show.
.99’s had a very tough few months. It lost Air New Zealand and Vodafone to DraftFCB and, as far as we’re aware, it’s not on the pitch list for the brand work for Westpac, although whether it retains the retail business seems dependent on which creative agency the bank goes with. So a few alarm bells went off when we heard Colenso and Special Group were doing work for one of its remaining big clients New World.
Yesterday, the Fijian government banned inbound tourists as flash flooding wreaked havoc. But, after a global pitch thought to have received more than 60 submissions, it’s thought Colenso BBDO will now be responsible for trying to get more of them to visit after beating out agencies from New Zealand, Australia and the US to become the new global agency for Tourism Fiji.
State Insurance went large in 2010 year when it launched its ‘Love your Stuff’ positioning with the ‘My Favourite Things’ campaign. And Colenso BBDO has taken that musical approach even further for the next iteration with a big new TV and radio campaign showing how quickly State can get things back on track.
After the success of Pepsi’s MaxIt Jobs campaign last year, there were high hopes for Colenso’s follow-up, Bromitment. But, by the power of Facebook, the vocal minority have got their way and convinced Frucor/Frucor’s PR agency to bow to online pressure and withdraw a prize offering a trip to the running of the bulls in Spain from the campaign.
It’s not just Whitcoulls, with its very public financial struggle and consequent sale in mid-last year, that is being affected by the slow sales of books in New Zealand. With literacy levels dropping year on year, the lack of trading is also keeping our country’s authors downtrodden and many of our stories untold. But the New Zealand Book Council, just like other separate entities like NZ Book Month, which won the not-for-profit gong at the TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards last year for trying to put a book in the hands of every Kiwi, is out to change this. And it’s latest ad, which was made by Colenso BBDO and follows up from the haunting and very well-awarded Going West with some more engaging paper artistry, aims to show the printed word can shape and inspire.
Burger King has been selling its tiny burgers overseas for a couple of years now (check out the “horniest, most boobstatic Burger King ad ever” from the US). And it’s just launched the seemingly lady-friendly products in New Zealand, with Colenso BBDO and Flying Fish getting together to create a new, fairly strange TVC that features some sweet electro funk, some fairly cool effects and some forced rhyming.
It may be the new kid on the ice block, but Tip Top’s campaign for the Ice Bar Co., which was created by Colenso BBDO, overshadowed the rest of the competition to win the November round of Colmar Brunton’s Ad Impact Award. And, judging by sales, the products are proving popular with the slightly wrinklier target market.
Last year the token Kiwi at Special Group did the campaign for our Axis Awards, revealing to us that we’d won “the most Cannes Lions per capita of any country in the world in 2010 – one Lion per 155,989 people. Sweden was second with one Lion per 202,173 residents. The ‘we invented advertising’ UK? A sorry 4th with one Lion per 849,886 people. The creative powerhouse of the USA? 8th buddy, 8th! with just one Lion per 2,287,003 people. Yesiree.” So, as another of the tiny handful of New Zealanders working in New Zealand advertising, I felt a sense of duty to follow in Tony Bradbourne’s footsteps when Patrick Collister, editor of Directory magazine and The Big Won Creative Rankings, sent me his 2011 data.
Tip Top launched its new range of Ice Bar Co. ice blocks last year and, slightly unusually, aimed them directly at the grown-ups. Typically, ice blocks were something for the kids to get all over their faces, and their popularity with this demographic meant such treats were always in jeopardy if the stash happened to be discovered in the freezer. But thankfully, Colenso BBDO has come up with an ingenious product that aims to keep the goods safe from the greedy little thieving parasites (or from curious flatmates): a frozen pea packet camouflage system that uses the threat of vegetables and phrases like ‘now extra bland’ and ‘eight fewer flavours than ever before’ to put mischievous kids off the scent. It’s tough finding the perfect gift. And time is running out to find it before Christmas. But Colenso and Heart of the City have joined forces to make it slightly easier—and to promote the shopping districts of the Auckland CBD—with the launch of the Gift Guru, a festive addition to the Big Little City website that offers hints and tips from “super stylist and shopping extraordinaire” Charlotte Rust.
The finalists of the direct and interactive marketing showcase that is the John Caples Awards have been announced, with Colenso on top from the local shops with 18 nods, followed by DDB and Rapp Tribal with nine, DraftFCB with seven, AIM Proximity and Republik with three, and .99, Publicis Mojo, Clemenger BBDO and Special Group on one. And in other awards news, Colenso dominated the Digital Media Awards Asia awards recently with two golds and three silvers, while Naked won silver for Powerade Challenge and Rapp Tribal won bronze for Telecom.
As far as first world problems go, searching for a scoop of hokey pokey on the summer roadtrip and discovering the store you stop at doesn’t do cones is right up there. It just doesn’t feel right if it’s not dripping down your arm and smothered all over your face. Thankfully, Tip Top and Colenso are attempting to remedy this with the new Scoop app, which gives ice-cream fiends the coordinates of their closest roller.
Much like DraftFCB and The National Bank, the industry has been waiting patiently to see what Colenso and Westpac would come up with after the account shifted from Saatchi & Saatchi last year. It’s already created the Impulse Saver app and a home loan spot and, while the new animated ad explaining the financial perils of the modern world that launched last night isn’t being seen as the big reveal, it is the first time the bank’s new tagline ‘help is what we do’ has been seen in the wild.
It’s fair to assume most of us have experienced that horrible feeling when you push send on an email and realise it’s gone to the wrong person. It’s a peril of the modern world and, in many cases, the email chain that ends up going public usually offers up a healthy dose of schadenfreude. So, in an effort to drum up some interest in the end of year graduation show for AWARD school tonight, DDB, Colenso and a couple of AWARD School students conducted something of an experiment with a ‘leaked email’ that showed up the industry’s insatiable desire for whoopsies.
With shareholders voting overwhelmingly in favour of splitting Telecom in two at the annual general meeting recently, the fall out from the “Abstain for the Game” campaign and the appointment of new marketing boss Jason Paris, change is most definitely in the wind for Telecom at the moment. And it’s thought the first phase of that change is cranking into gear.
When it comes to valuable marketing commodities, celebrity chef, food writer, publisher and TV star Annabel Langbein is basically the Dan Carter of cooking. And Silver Fern Farms has signed on to use Langbein as its meaty ambassador for her property Fresh Everyday.
DB went to great lengths to launch its Monteith’s Single Source ultra-premium lager last year. And now an ad for the brand has hit Kiwi TV screens for the first time in five years, with a new agency in tow and a new branded reality show soon to air on TV ONE.
It’s been a difficult few months for Colenso, with Vodafone pulling the pin and moving up the road to .99 before a full pitch kicks off. But the good news is starting to filter back in: executive creative director Nick Worthington has just returned from Spikes Asia with an impressive haul of medals and it has also won the Les Mills International account.
