International business success comes with a huge amount of blood, sweat and tears but that doesn’t deter some of New Zealand’s most innovative companies from breaking down business barriers offshore. Their hard work gets recognised in the much-coveted New Zealand International Business Awards.
You creative, markety types like a bit of art. And the World Giving Report shows that New Zealanders are pretty generous too. So why not combine the two and head along to ‘It’s Complicated’ at Studio 230 in Ponsonby next week.
Campaign Asia-Pacific magazine has named DDB as New Zealand’s creative agency of the year as well as the runner-up digital agency of the year. Also continuing its winning streak was Colenso BBDO, which picked up the gong for New Zealand’s best digital agency. And OMD also left with silverware picking up the award for the best media agency in New Zealand.
Bread with “no nasties” wins Goodman Fielder the October 2014 Ad Impact Award from Colmar Brunton, while a slap of paint with a clap of the hands gain Clemenger BBDO a nod, and a quick save for Sealord gets Ogilvy & Mather an honourable mention.
2015 will mark the 35th anniversary of the Axis Awards, and to commemorate this milestone CAANZ will be showcasing some of the work that has been awarded over the course of that period. But, as has always been the case, this year’s edition will be about awarding the best work produced over the course of the last year. And to do that as effectively as possible, CAANZ has introduced a few changes to the awards categories for this year’s event.

For the third year in a row the Diamond gong given to the best piece of work entered in the international Echo Awards will be returning from San Diego to Auckland. On 30 October, this prestigious direct marketing award was awarded to Republik New Zealand for Fuji Xerox’s ‘Wide War One’ campaign, which also picked up a gold in the ‘information technologies’ category. This Diamond win follows on from Colenso’s 2012 and 2013 wins. And while the College Hill agency didn’t make three in a row, it didn’t leave the awards show empty handed either.
Last night, at a sold out event hosted at the Langham, FCB was crowned New Zealand’s most effective agency at the 2014 Effie Awards. And it wasn’t even a close race. With its tally of 94 points, FCB was convincingly ahead of Saatchi & Saatchi in second place on 54 points and Colenso BBDO/Proximity New Zealand in third on 52 points.
For most of the year, research agencies are the unsung heroes of the industry, with their insights outshone by the creativity that usually takes centre stage. However, last Friday, the limelight shifted and drew attention to examples of the most effective research conducted over the course of the last year. Kiwi agencies have once again pulled in a decent haul of silverware on the international awards circuit, with the latest tally of gongs coming from the prestigious Clio Awards. And although the New Zealand contingent missed out on picking up a Grand Clio, NZTA’s ‘Mistakes’ campaign picked up two golds. Axis gongs, client wins and the quality of campaigns usually define competition in the creative advertising industry. But every year, for one night, none of that matters, as the agencies take to the stage and vie for the greatest honour of them all: the Battle of the Ad Bands (BOTAB) title. This year was no different. A total of 550 fans converged at the Kings Arms to watch the madness unfold as Pegasus and The Job Numbers (Colenso BBDO), The Gypsy Thieves (DDB), The OG Villains (Ogilvy & Mather), The Expendables 5 (Sugar & Partners and String Theory), Foote Cone (FCB), Dooya (WhybinTBWA/DAN), Building 7 (Flying Fish) and The Chased (OMD) took a moment away from their day jobs to slap the bass in front of three judges.
Much has been written, said and trolled about the value of awards to creative agencies. And while the industry is still divided between those who choose to enter the slew of international competitions and those who shun them, it’s difficult to overlook how successfully Colenso BBDO has represented Kiwi creativity on the international awards circuit over the course of the last year. And now, with an award that shows the cumulative value of all this success, the agency on College Hill has been named as the world’s smartest creative agency in new rankings released by Warc.
The theme for this year’s TVNZ NZ Marketing Awards was Make Marketing History, evoking great marketing successes of the past and inspiring today’s marketers to join the winners ranks. Following the receivership of MediaWeb, NZ Management Magazine was bought by the NZIM and given to Adrenalin to publish alongside its existing title NZ Business. MediaWeb used to own the Deloitte Top 200 Awards, which celebrate New Zealand’s most outstanding large businesses and their people, and the event was seen as a “cash cow and jewel in the crown” of the company. But it’s thought the IP was transferred to Deloitte when MediaWeb couldn’t pay the bills, so, without anyone to run this year’s awards, it recently put that business on the block and APN New Zealand has won it. The Best Awards finalists have been announced, with a bevy of great design from New Zealand and Australasia. The annual awards are organised by Designers Institute of New Zealand and names the very best in graphic, spatial, product and interactive design, awarding a coveted purple pin to the winner of each category. This year there was a strong involvement in getting Australian designers to enter, wanting to put a spotlight on Australasian design, and CEO of Designers Insitute of New Zealand Cathy Veninga says standards have remained high.
Fairfax is continuing its diversification by creating a special national events division to span Fairfax media properties that have until now run their own events.
Earlier this week, the 2014 Global Effie Effectiveness Index results were released and, for the third time in a row, Colenso BBDO has been listed as one of the top 10 most effective agencies in the world. The results also came with good news for Barnes, Catmur and Friends, which finished fourth in the world among independent agencies and first in the Asia Pacific region.
Fourteen years ago, Jai Waite dove into a wave in Greece and hit a sandbar, becoming paralysed from the chest down with only limited function in his arms and hands. Now, as production editor at Attitude Pictures, he’s won a prestigious Apollo award for his documentary “Jimmy Wants a Job” – and it was edited using his knuckles.
By the time the curtain was drawn on the 2014 Cannes Festival of Creativity, a total of 1143 lions had been distributed to the finest examples of advertising to have been published throughout the world over the course of the last year. And of these gongs, 25 will be making their way back to New Zealand in the laps of Kiwi winners.
The media category proved to be very fruitful for the six shortlisted Kiwi entries, with Colenso BBDO’s ‘Smartphone Line’ picking up a silver and bronze, FCB’s ‘Bottled Walkman’ picking up a bronze and DDB’s ‘Animal Strike’ also winning a bronze. Six Kiwi entries have been shortlisted for Media Lions at Cannes, and FCB leads the Kiwi charge with three nominations. Colenso BBDO and Starcom NZ follow close behind with two nominations for their work on the ‘Smartphone Line’ for Samsung, while DDB NZ and OMD round off the Kiwi contingent with a nomination for the ‘Animal Strike’ campaign for Paw Justice.
After around 18 years of fusing art with commerce, events and media company Madant has morphed into Uno Loco. And with clients increasingly looking to create experiences, not just ads, and with events companies increasingly dabbling in other areas, the planets appear to be in alignment for this successful yet under-the-radar business.
This is just a quick reminder that the entry window for the TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards is almost closed. Although the call for entries deadline is 23 May, this date can be extended to 30 May upon application. Those interested in entering can still download an entry from the event website.
On 9 May, about three weeks after the finalists were first announced, the One Show awards were handed out, and the results were somewhat underwhelming for the Kiwi agencies originally shortlisted. Of the 18 awards that the Kiwi contingent could’ve won, only four resulted in silverware, with Clemenger BBDO, Colenso BBDO/Proximity and Shine picking up gongs.
The constant stream of awards ceremonies continues unabated with the release of the voluminous list of Communicator Awards winners from all over the world. And included within this expansive archive were seven awards for Auckland-based digital agency Gladeye, which won four gold and three silver gongs.
The first-ever Beacon Awards took place last night at the Viaduct Events Centre in front of a capacity crowd, and it was FCB Media that got by far the most exercise, with independent MBM winning agency of the year, MediaWorks TV winning media brand of the year, Maritime New Zealand taking client of the year and Nielsen’s Claire Harris accepting the inspiring individual award.
For the first time in the three-year history of the competition, Kiwi and Aussie entrants went head to head as they vied to be selected as one of Yahoo’s Digital Stars. And while our neighbours across the ditch dominated proceedings by taking seven of the nine available spots, employees from two Kiwi agencies placed among the winners. Ikon’s communications planner Meei Chai and OMD Wellington’s senior digital planner Will Innes were both singled out at the competition, which recognise the best up-and-coming talent in the media agency arena.
As in 2013, Facebook again only handed out two of its coveted Blue Awards at this year’s edition of the Studio Awards. The difference this year, however, was that one of the Blue Awards—the Facebook for Good award— was awarded to an agency for work done for a not-for-profit organisation. And the emergence of this change came with good news for Colenso BBDO/Proximity, as the agency won the first gong in the newly created category for the ‘Trial by Timeline’ campaign, which was executed for Amnesty International. Ogilvy & Mather has won the inaugural News Works Agency League competition, which since last March has has been celebrating the nation’s standout newspaper adverts on a monthly basis.
The finalists for the 41st edition of the annual One Show Awards, regarded as one of the most prestigious in the world, have been announced, and Kiwi agencies have been acknowledged as finalists in 20 of the categories listed. This year, the show received almost 22,000 entries from 63 countries, and these were then whittled down to 1,229 finalists (from 463 agencies) by a panel of international judges. Each of these finalists will now have to wait until 9 May, when the winners will be announced during a ceremony at Lincoln Centre in New York City. As was the case last year, Clemenger and Colenso received the most nominations among the Kiwi agencies.
