Cupcakes all round for ASB’s beardy new mascot and Mitre 10’s romantic instructional video.

Bacon roses, a cat with a heart on it, or perhaps just a laid-back, low key fight. The list of options available to show you love on this most romantic of days is almost limitless. And Mitre 10 has helped aspiring romantics by offering instruction on how to play a tool-based love song.
Hyundai’s ode to towing, Pak ‘n’ Save’s Countdown takedown and the next instalment of NZ Fire Service’s powerful campaign get the nod this week.
Off the cuff comment by Top Gear presenter fuels speculation that the show is coming to New Zealand to film our talented dogs, however the agency behind the campaign says it’s pure speculation.
The new Mother of the Nation returns to primetime, Yellow adds a digi-double, DraftFCB in full production, Air New Zealand’s new people person, Homestyle finds an editor, Allied Press shakes hands with a rival, and Anthony Reardon heads online.
Lance Armstrong’s much-publicised interview with Oprah Winfrey made for prime social media fodder, with an array of quips, opinions and parody videos spewing forth following the confessions about his drug use (our favourite: “Hats off to Lance Armstrong. I tried to ride a bike whilst on drugs, hit a kerb and fell off and I wasn’t even going fast in France, just slow in Dunedin”). And, never one to miss an opportunity for a humorous contextual ad, Pak ‘n Save and DraftFCB have quickly climbed aboard the Doprah bandwagon too.
Earlier this week, DraftFCB announced it would be handing the Westfield baton on for ‘commercial reasons’. And a few days later it’s announced something of a replacement, as it has been appointed as the full service advertising agency for Paper Plus Group after a competitive pitch process that was thought to have involved the late Publicis Mojo, Hotfoot and the incumbent Hyde, which relaunched the brand back in late 2011.
Three years after winning the Westfield New Zealand account, DraftFCB has resigned the business, with the agency finishing up on 31 March.
When it comes to Kiwi viral sensations, we may have a new champion, because DraftFCB, Mini and the SPCA’s campaign that put homeless mutts behind the wheel of a modified Mini has been picked up by most of the world’s major media outlets, been the most shared video on BBC three days running, with 225,000 shares to Facebook and 7,900 to Twitter, and ranks as the biggest news event on Campbell Live in its seven-and-a-half year history.
The last TVC of the Week accolade for 2012 and it’s the global phenomenon that is driving dogs, mobile innuendo and kids mixed with science that taste victory.
Fresh from winning more Caples metal than any other agency in the world over the weekend, Colenso BBDO followed that up by winning Campaign Asia Pacific’s New Zealand creative agency of the year award ahead of DDB Group and DraftFCB, with creative chairman Nick Worthington named as the Australasian region’s best creative director. DDB Group also backed up a good year on the awards front, with Rapp/Tribal winning digital agency of the year ahead of Colenso BBDO and TBWA\DAN, while Spark PHD was rewarded for an impressive year with the media agency of the year title, ahead of Naked and OMD.
We’ve seen some pretty creative ideas used to increase pet adoptions and gather donations in New Zealand in recent years, with Colenso’s Doggelganger and Donation Glasses standing out in that regard. And now DraftFCB and Mini have joined the furry fray with a so crazy it just might work campaign for the SPCA that will see Porter, a 10 month old Beardie Cross from SPCA Auckland, attempt to drive a car live on TV.
After an industry-wide review, The NZ Direct Marketing Awards had a big refresh this year, with a new name, a new judging process and a number of new categories and individual awards resulting in a 12 percent increase in the number of overall entries. And those entries have been whittled down to the finalist stage, with justONE leading on 16, DraftFCB on 12, Colenso BBDO on eight, Loyalty NZ on six, Affinity ID, Federation Rapp Tribal on five, and Twenty and ANZ/National on four.
Amid the controversy that seems to have attached itself to the release of the first Hobbit film, Wellingtonians in particular will be hard-pressed to forget the premiere is taking place in their city, not least thanks to the two-storey Middle Earth wrap that’s been attached to the side of Clemenger BBDO’s Wellington office. That’s one more Hobbit-themed gesture to add to a growing list that also includes DraftFCB’s baggage carousel at Wellington airport, Air New Zealand’s Hobbit aircraft and, of course, Tourism New Zealand’s 100% Middle-earth.
The best moment of my life was undoubtedly winning the meat pack at a friend’s wedding, closely followed by the time when three loyalty cards came due on the same day. So it was pleasing to learn that an ad celebrating sexy meat for Pak ‘n’ Save’s Meat Week has won DraftFCB the October ORCA.
And we bow down and give TVC of the Week praise to Westpac’s bickering oldies, Good Books’ bodice ripper, Stickman’s chicken adulation, OPSM’s surf lifesaving tie-in and Big Little City’s visual love letter to Auckland.
Rob Banks heads to New York, Naked appoints a head of Australasian ideas and viral fun glutton Rob Whitey McConnaughy joins the Sweet Shop.
Given Genesis Energy is the biggest spender in the electricity sector, clocking in with a very specific $4,408,317 in the year to July according to Nielsen’s AIS data, the news it was up for pitch whipped up a bit of excitement in agency land. From what we’ve heard, pretty much every non-conflicted man and his dog was in the room at the RFP stage, which could either be seen as an indication Genesis was testing the whole market to find the best partner or it didn’t know what kind of agency it actually wanted. But reliable sources have informed us the shortlist has now been decided on, with .99, Y&R, M&C Saatchi and DraftFCB thought to be getting set to fight it out for creative duties and Spark and Naked thought to be in the running for media.
We’re fans of ad agencies that back up what they do for their clients by advertising and we think they should do it more often (*cough, StopPress media kit, cough*). DraftFCB leads the pack in that regard and has created a great brand that it can hang its hat on. There’s a pretty big gap back to second, but Special Group has been known to talk itself up from time to time. And to celebrate its packaging pin at the Best Awards for OOB ice cream and drum home its belief that design and advertising need to kiss and make-up, it placed this ad in last week’s Herald.
If you just so happen to be sitting on a chair on top of your Persian rug with a power chord nearby, clearly you like living dangerously. Or maybe you just don’t know that your chair is in fact a four-legged assassin conspiring with the other objects in and around your house to cause your demise. So, in an effort to draw attention to the unsuspecting objects that are often implicit in home-related injury, DraftFCB launched ‘Fight the 5’, its campaign for ACC’s Home Safety Action Week.
We pointed them out a few weeks back when the Herald shrunk, and DraftFCB’s entertaining contextual ads—‘Magnifying Glass, Pirate and Shrink Ray’—for Pak ‘n’ Save to celebrate the paper’s new format have also impressed the judges of the September round of the Newspaper Ad of the Month awards.
DraftFCB’s Steph Pearson was one of two winners of Yahoo!’s inaugural Digital Stars competition. And this glimpse into the future of media earned her that title.
There were a few raised eyebrows when Telecom chose a turtle to play the role of brand mascot in the new Tommy and Boris campaign. And Vodafone has taken the opportunity to subtly poke fun at its major competitor with a cheeky wee number starring its spokesboy James Rolleston and a greyhound called metaphor.
The fusing of two financial entities that between them have nearly half of the population on their books is a massive—and massively complicated—task, both logistically in terms of back-end systems and emotionally in terms of assuaging customers’ fears through communications. It’s been in the planning for a while, of course, and in response to yesterday’s official announcement that ANZ would be phasing out the National Bank over the next two years, Whybin\TBWA is about to launch a big integrated campaign that “heralds the start of a new era for ANZ and reassures customers they will be getting the best of both worlds”.
By mobilising apathetic New Zealanders to see if they could get a better deal on their power, the What’s My Number campaign changed the electricity retail landscape.
He’s helped DraftFCB New Zealand go from middle of the road to top of the pops in pretty quick time. And now, after being promoted to the role of group executive creative director for Australia and New Zealand last year, James Mok has been given a chance to dabble in the Asia Pacific with a new regional role.
The ‘Cannes of the South’ kicked off over the weekend and the first blast of shortlists from Spikes Asia has been announced, with Colenso BBDO and DDB Group on top in terms of Kiwi agencies.
Genesis Energy has put out an RFP for advertising and media buying services and, given Nielsen AIS figures show it’s the biggest spender in the electricity sector, with ratecard spend of $4.4 million in the past 12 months, there will presumably be plenty of interest from the major players.
A plethora of televisual commercial messages that caught our attention this week, with New World, TAB, New Zealand Herald, Alzheimers New Zealand, Freeview and Max all receiving a metaphorical $20 meatpack.
We’ve already written a fair bit about the strangely unusual approach of DraftFCB, that rare breed of advertising agency that actually advertises. And the agency behind APN’s campaign to launch the new compact Herald took an opportunity to put itself out there once again with another good full-page print ad in the ‘collector’s edition’ yesterday. And, not one to miss an opportunity for a few laffs, Pak’n’Save’s spokestick Stickman also got involved with the relaunch and featured in three contextual ads, which were also created by DraftFCB.
