Mud, sweat and Marc Ellis’ tears: Toyota’s Top to Bottom goes long—and off road
By

Hardly a day goes by without someone announcing another journey that will see the protagonists walk/run/bike/kayak/forward roll the length of New Zealand to raise awareness for something (StopPress is considering driving half the length of New Zealand to raise money for McDonald’s). And, to celebrate 60 years of Land Cruiser, Toyota is getting on the bandwagon, taking the newly launched FJ Cruiser truck on an epic journey. But the difference with this journey is that it will all be done off-road, with Marc Ellis bouncing around in the driver’s seat.

Saatchi’s and BCRT make the C word relevant to all Kiwis with ‘1 in 9’
By

The Breast Cancer Research Trust (BCRT) certainly raised awareness with its ‘no big deal’ billboards last year. But it also raised the ire of some of those most affected by the disease. This time, however, the charity that aims to find a cure for the disease by 2018 through funding for innovative research initiatives and its agency Saatchi & Saatchi have taken a more traditional approach to putting breast cancer in the spotlight with an emotive new integrated campaign called ‘1 in 9’.

Imitation or inspiration?

There’s always plenty of discussion in the ad industry as to where the line between plagiarism and creative inspiration is drawn. TV3 has felt the cool accusatory breeze a couple of times this year with some of its promotional work. And, after Colenso discovered two of its Vodafone commercials …

Telecom strokes patriotic egos, tugs on heartstrings and gets back in the brand space
By

Much like watching an All Black return from injury, the marcomms sector always keeps a very close eye on the communications work of companies that have recently suffered some kind of PR crisis. Certainly, when Telecom’s Paul Reynolds came out in his waders in Glenorchy after the XT debacle with an apologetic number asking New Zealand for forgiveness, opinions on whether or not this was appropriate spewed forth. Since then there have been plenty of ads promoting specific deals and products (sadly, the on-air proposal didn’t really work out either), but Telecom and Saatchi & Saatchi now appear to have resumed normal branding transmission with the release of a beautiful new TVC (by Prodigy films), print campaign and positioning statement ‘From here we can do anything’.

Terrible pun used as Colenso, DraftFCB and Barnes, Catmur & Friends all bubble with EFFIEvescence
By

The EFFIEs aren’t usually seen as the most glamorous or creative of the CAANZ events (as evidenced by the historic victory of Farmer’s Red Dot Specials a few years back). But, in terms of what advertising is actually meant to do, it should really be deemed the most important. And Colenso BBDO, DraftFCB and Barnes, Catmur & Friends have come through the first two rounds of judging as the country’s three most effective agencies for 2010.

Saatchi Wellington unveils harrowing new Women’s Refuge campaign
By

The tagline for the 2010 Women’s Refuge appeal almost says it all: ‘Living in fear isn’t living’. But Saatchi & Saatchi Wellington have managed to say a bit more about the scourge of domestic violence in New Zealand with their creative work. And by raising awareness of what it’s like to live in psychologically or physically abusive homes, it hopes more funds can be raised to help the women and children leading fear-filled lives.

Crafty, filmy-types named on Cannes shortlists

Colenso BBDO’s award-winning work for the New Zealand Book Council has been shortlisted in the Film and Film Craft categories at the 2010 Cannes Lions Advertising Festival. Clearly not content to rest on their laurels, or indeed these other laurels here, Colenso has been shortlisted in the Sound Design and Animation sections of the Film Craft Category, whilst also making the cut in the Public Awareness Messages section of the Film Category.
