TRB releases its ‘unofficial’ Axis awards video

To leverage its sponsorship of the Radio category at this year’s Axis awards, the Radio Bureau ran a very impressive promotion to choose the decade’s best radio ad and gave away some top notch booty to the voters/winners on awards night, including a couple of round the world airfares. Now it has released its ‘unofficial’ Axis awards video, which, in a rare bacon-free performance, is hosted by ‘that guy’ Leigh Hart, whose typically awkward interviewing style and complete lack of shame makes for a fairly entertaining spiritual journey through the exciting world of advertising—and advertising stereotypes.

TVNZ Student Axis: Jono Fox + Jack Delmonte, AdSchool

The brief from TVNZ to the young advertising whippersnappers was to get more viewers to tune into ONE’s flagship 6pm bulletin. And Jono Fox and Jack Delmonte of Adschool took the win with their smart integrated campaign ‘Make Sense of it at Six’. The other finalists were Jen Waldron and Ben Polkinghorne of  AdSchool and Adam Martin of AUT University’s Creative Advertising School.

Social & Digital/Interactive: Colenso BBDO + DraftFCB

Colenso’s ‘Yellow Chocolate’ was the only campaign deemed worthy of a nod in the Social category and was awarded one of eight golds for its efforts, while DraftFCB’s ‘The Journal’ was also a lonely winner in the Digital/Interactive category after picking up a bronze.

There was only one award handed out in the websites category, and while DraftFCB and the Ministry of Health’s ‘The Journal’ wiped the floor at the RSVP & Nexus Awards, a bronze was all it warranted at Axis.

Direct Response/Direct Campaign/Direct Mail: Colenso BBDO, Special Group + DDB

In the Direct Response section, Colenso took gold for Yellow Chocolate and a silver for ‘A Rubbish Idea’, while Special Group also took gold for ‘Orcon Business Banner’. And in the Direct Campaign, Colenso came home with both awards, a gold for Yellow Chocolate and a bronze for TVNZ’s ‘Real Stories’ to promote its show The Pacific. In the Direct Mail category, ‘A Rubbish Idea’ and ‘Real Stories’ both took silver, as did DDB’s Catalogue & Tee Shirt Folding Machine for AS Colour.

Integrated, Interactive & Titanium: Colenso BBDO + Special Group

Colenso BBDO took all three awards handed out in the Integrated category, with gold for ‘Yellow Chocolate’ and a bronze apiece for Frucor’s ‘V Ladders’ and TVNZ’s ‘Real Stories’ to promote its show The Pacific. It also cleaned up in the Titanium category, with ‘A Rubbish Idea’ taking bronze and ‘Yellow Chocolate’ turning gold once again. Special Group took the only Interactive Axis, winning gold for the ‘Orcon Business Banner’.

Online Advertising & Branded Content: Special Group

Special Group, Salt Interactive and Orcon took the humble web banner to places the web banner has never been before in New Zealand and took gold in Online Advertising for their efforts with Orcon. And, by adding Twitter and Facebook functions, it became a rare beast: a banner that was actually shared among friends, showing that interactive utility shows its stripes when impressive content is created to suit the medium. Special Group also won bronze in the branded content for the Volvo ‘Blindfold’ campaign.

Editing, Visual Craft & Direction (on any screen): Capital City Films, Curious, Robber’s Dog, Flying Fish, Film Construction + The Sweet Shop

In the Editing category, Capital City Films took a silver for Frucor’s ‘Ladders’, Robber’s Dog took bronze for DDB and Volkswagen’s ‘Milk Run’, while Curious came away with two bronzes, one for Liam Finn’s Guide to New Zealand for Tourism New Zealand and the other for Nike’s ‘The Tomic Incident’; in Visual Craft, Capital City Films and Sky took gold for ‘Leafblower’ and silver for Frucor’s Ladders, while Flying Fish picked up a bronze for Vodafone’s ‘In With the New’; and in the Direction section, Capital City Films took another gold with ‘Leafblower’ and three other bronzes were handed out, one for Capital City Films and Frucor’s ‘Ladders’, one for The Sweet Shop and Lotto’s ‘Lucky Dog’ and one for Film Construction’s ‘ALAC Sam’.

Capital City Films has been rewarded for an impressive array of work in past 12 months with the Production Company of the Year award, after winning a host of two golds two silvers for a bronze for Sky and DDB’s ‘Leafblower’ and Colenso and V’s ‘Ladders’.

Advertising advertising: Axis gets a starring role with TVNZ

New Zealanders seem to have something of a love/hate attitude when it comes to marketing and advertising. Some despise it because it tricks people into buying things they don’t need, makes the nation fatter/drunker/more dangerous and is an industry supposedly filled with wankers. But others seem to be able to look past all that and simply enjoy biting into the fruits of the industry’s labour. Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt Kiwis are interested in it, as evidenced by the fact that the Fair Go Ad Awards is regularly among the country’s top rating shows. And CAANZ and TVNZ are hoping to tap into this interest and showcase the creative, innovative side of the business by filming the Axis award show and screening it on Ondemand.

The Axis Awards are just around the corner. And Andy Fackrell of 180 Amsterdam (quite possibly the most successful ex-pat Kiwi creative), Bryan Rowles of 72 and Sunny in Los Angeles and Dejan Rasic of Colman Rasic in Sydney are the three international boffins doing the judging. All three will show their work and wax lyrical at the Axis Creative Function on Wednesday 30 March (tickets are on sale at www.caanz.co.nz), but in an effort to limit the awkward silence that almost always eventuates after Kiwi crowds are asked if they have any questions, we want you to add yours to the comment wall. The best ones will be read out on the night by MC Oliver Driver, leaving you to focus on your drinking.

Colenso, DDB and DraftFCB top the creative tables as AXIS shortlist announced

It’s difficult to get too excited about the announcement of the AXIS finalists given what’s happening in Christchurch at the moment. But the world keeps turning and after 50 judges spent three days going through 650 entries across 43 different categories, the rather long shortlist for the 31st instalment of the creative awards has been released. And, after some exhaustive counting, Colenso BBDO came out on top with 75 finalist nods, followed by DDB on 55 and DraftFCB on 49. Download the pdf here. Axis Finalist List.
