ANZ’s new campaign hits K Road like a wrecking ball

A large wrecking ball is swinging into the side of a building on Auckland’s Karangahape Road.

The giant custom-engineered structure was built to promote ANZ bank’s new Reno Loan, as part of a campaign by Phantom Billstickers, TBWA\NZ and PHD Aotearoa.

The new loan allows ANZ customers to top their home loans up to $50,000, in order to perform renovations.

A feat of craft

The installation centres around the wrecking ball, built by hand by Phantom Billstickers Custom Shop team.

It sits suspended above street level, mounted on a heavy-gauge chain and embedded in hand-painted crack that spider webs its way across the building behind it.

While the crack is merely painted on, the ball has been finished to look and feel like solid concrete.

A sequential street poster installation below carries the ANZ Reno Loan campaign messaging, bringing cohesion to the build.

Creating experiences

Phantom Billstickers brand GM Tom Horton says this install is is a reminder that the most powerful advertising creates an experience.

“Campaigns like this show that out of home is fast transforming into the medium that creates theatre in the public realm. The street is the stage. This is what it looks like when a brand uses it for maximum impact.”

PHD Aotearoa client service director Kirsty Turner adds: “The most effective media doesn’t just show up – it stands out. By leaning into special builds, we’re turning everyday environments into moments people stop for, engage with and share. This is where out of home is at its most powerful.”
