As many proponents of the magazine industry say, it’s not about paper, it’s about communities of interest. In many areas, those communities of interest—and many advertisers—are heading online to get their information and inspiration, so, with pressure on paid-for circulation, it’s becoming more important for these titles to have a quality online presence. And two of Tangible Media’s titles—Idealog and NZ Fishing World—have responded to those changes with redesigned, responsive websites.
Small businesses are all about the people, right? The owners, the manufacturers, the clientele. There’s a story at every turn, so why aren’t they being told? Well, at an event organised by Good magazine, London-based designer and technologist Jessi Baker, the founder of social enterprise Project Provenance, will be sharing her experience around storytelling in small business marketing and creating user-centred experiences in the e-commerce sphere. The Dominion Post and NZ Herald will contest this year’s Canon Media Award for Best Newspaper with circulation over 30,000, while Good, Home and The Listener are the finalists for Best Newsstand Magazine. In the new Best Blog category it’s Toby Manhire, Cameron Slater and Giovanni Tiso, with Best Website finalist placings handed to 3News, The Wireless and Yahoo NZ.
Once again, Nielsen’s latest readership results and the ABC’s circulation numbers don’t make for particularly pleasant reading for the magazine sector, with all weeklies charting declines deemed significant on the same time last year, plenty of other significant declines and a rare few increases. And, perhaps not surprisingly, the MPA and the various publishers are hoping to change the conversation from a one-dimensional discussion about quantity, to a multi-dimensional discussion about the quality of engagement across a number of platforms.
There are many strange holidays. International Houseplant Appreciation Day, Pissing Day or International Talk like a Pirate Day. Brands occasionally get in on the act as well and create their own (American Express won two grand prix at Cannes in 2012 for its small business day). And global footwear company Keen has joined that club with Worldwide Recess Day.
The Maggies judges have spoken and the covers they have deemed to be the country’s best will now fight it out for top honours in their respective categories, plus the coveted overall cover of the year award, as they go up for a public vote over the next five weeks at www.themaggies.co.nz.
The Commerce Commission has warned fruit importer Dole it may be in breach of the Fair Trading Act on three separate counts relating to the company’s Ethical Choice marketing scheme. However, only a court can decide if there has actually been a breach of the Fair Trading Act, with convicted companies liable for fines of up to $200,000.
It’s the night the magazine industry comes together to, as ACP head honcho Paul Dykzeul might say, indulge in a bit of gratuitous back patting. Or, as the MPA might say, reward the publications, publishers, editors, designers, sales folk and contributors who toil away on their various titles. And it was Good and Cuisine’s Sarah Nicholson that reigned supreme on the night, winning the top magazine and editor of the year prizes respectively.
Nothing endures but change, and the latest newspaper and magazine stats from Nielsen and the Audit Bureau of Circulation are no exception, as the ABC changes both its methodology, and its frequency of audits. The ABC will now be sending out quarterly rolling averages, instead of the six months end-on-end averages it has been doing. The key benefits for marketers and agencies will be receiving more regular data, and the methodology of releasing rolling annual totals is aligned with readership.
The Fairtrade movement has become a huge marketing force in recent years, with a massive increase in sales and a few big corporates starting to sign up to this more ethical approach to business. And Harriet Lamb, who helped kick off the UK Fairtrade Association about 10 years ago, is one of the women responsible for making this change happen. Tangible Media announced that it would be making some changes to Good magazine back in October. Well, the makeover is now complete, with a fresh editorial direction from new editor Sarah Heeringa and a snazzy redesign by art director Sally Fullam.
