Free digital training offered for NZ newsrooms

Telum Media and the Google News Initiative are joining forces to offer free digital tools training to help upskill Kiwi journalists.

The workshops will begin in Auckland from August 11 with further workshops taking place in the Auckland, Canterbury, Wellington, Waikato and Otago regions across October, December 2022, and then February, and March 2023.

Mridula Amin, Google Teaching Fellow, has previously worked for ABC News, The New York Times, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.

Amin has won three Walkley awards for her long-form feature and visual work, and was named the 2021 Walkleys Young Australian Journalist of the Year for her Background Briefing investigation ‘the hidden park of last resort.

Workshops will focus on the latest techniques to verify information, how to understand and visualise data, learning to track and analyse digital information and locating and reporting on digital documents.

Michael Webster, Telum Media CEO says Telum Media has been a longstanding champion of quality independent journalism.

“We are delighted to be working with Google to equip New Zealand reporters and media organisations with the digital know-how to find, verify, and tell the stories that matter.”

Uma Patel, Google News Lab Lead says it’s exciting to work with New Zealand newsrooms to enhance their digital reporting.

“I was lucky enough to work in the Beehive as a political journalist and I know New Zealand has a vast breadth of talent, chutzpah and ingenuity that’ll be valued more by audience as they grow their digital audiences.”
