Marc Ellis has already got a pretty full CV. And he can now add radio host to his resume after the former All Black turned broadcaster and businessman took a day job hosting the More FM Auckland breakfast team.
Ellis will be joined by TV personality Amber Peebles and radio announcer Stu Tolan when the new look breakfast team kick off at 5.30am on Monday 7 November on 91.8FM. The catalyst for change was Jeremy Corbett’s resignation earlier in the year, with the outgoing breakfast team of Corbett, Joe Cotton and Peter Dakin finishing on air on Friday 21 October.
“I really enjoyed hosting More FM breakfast a few months back and thought I wouldn’t mind doing this each day,” says Ellis. “I’m a morning person and finishing radio mid-morning allows the remainder of the day to work in and on my other businesses and projects. It certainly was fun spinning a few yarns in the morning and I’m looking forward to getting this thing up and running in November.”
“If there is one guy who was made for radio it’s Marc,” says MediaWorks Radio group programme director, Andrew Szusterman. “As a company we’re really excited he’s coming to work with us, and matching him up with Amber and Stu will no doubt will see a shakeup of Auckland breakfast radio.”
Cotton will present the MORE FM Network Night Show from October 23 (covering for Lee Plummer, who is on maternity leave), while Dakin will continue to host at sister station Solid Gold.
Bob’s your uncle
The PRINZ Communicator of the Year award recognises a person who demonstrates excellent personal communication skills and may be a public or sector leader who espouses open and honest communications within his or her organisation.
PRINZ members from around the country make nominations each month from which the winner is chosen by PRINZ’s College of Fellows. Other nominees for the award included Pike River Mine’s Peter Whittall, CERA’s Roger Sutton, Zespri’s Lain Jager, Sir Paul Reeves, Paul Callaghan and sign language guru Jeremy Borland (all monthly winners can be viewed on the PRINZ website).
Parker was nominated for his handling of the communication around the 4 September 2010 earthquake in Christchurch.
His nomination said: “At a time when people wanted a communicator and a leader, he stepped up and performed both roles extremely well. Always there, always articulate despite no doubt having his own issues, on-going aftershocks and lack of sleep, he set an example of being a great communicator.”
“At the time of the major earthquakes, it was just so important that we got information out to our residents about what was happening and where they could turn for help as quickly as possible,” says Parker. “It was also important that we all reassured each other in the middle of what was a very frightening situation for everyone. None of us knew at that time what the future might hold. In those darkest hours for our city, I was just one part of an amazing team of people in an extraordinary community. I was simply doing my job like everyone else and I am really grateful to have been part of such a superb team.”

Young & Shand & Growing
Digital agency Young & Shand has just moved into a swanky new office in downtown Auckland. And, after some good account wins, it’s also adding to its headcount with Evey Burilin and Jesse Kelly.
“She comes with a psychology degree, but promises she can’t read minds,” says Ben Young. “Outside of working hours Evey is likely to be injuring herself at netball, or collecting things on her blog that make her laugh. Needless to say, Marian and Jo are very excited to have another woman in the office.”
“He’s assured the team that with him on board we’ll take out the Battle of the Agency Bands next year and he is one of the only members of the team who wears colour.”
Atkinson in at Adshel
Rob Atkinson, Clear Channel UK’s chief operating officer, has been appointed interim chief executive from 1 November following the departure of Steve McCarthy. Atkinson will be on secondment until a permanent chief exec is appointed.
He will report to Mark Thewlis, regional president Asia Pacific for Clear Channel and Adshel joint venture owner and Richard Herring, APN News and Media’s Group Radio and Outdoor chief executive and Adshel joint venture owner.
“I am looking forward to working with the talented team at Adshel who are achieving success within a thriving out-of-home media sector,” Atkinson says. “This secondment is a fantastic opportunity to share my skills and knowledge while getting to grips with different business challenges and a new culture.”
He will be based in Sydney and relocate from the UK in coming weeks.
ZenithOptimedia media manager Sunita Bhana will represent New Zealand in the in-house ‘Live My Life’, a value exchange programme built to provide an international experience to ZenithOptimedia’s staff and act as a retention tool for the agency.
Bhana is one of 86 winners and will travel to Shanghai, China in 2012 for her experience.
The delegates selected spend up to two weeks in another ZO Office. In return, they take care of a visitor from another ZO office for the exchange period.
“We are in the middle of a war on talent. Great people are hard to find and even harder to retain, ” says Ryf Quail, general manager of ZenithOptimedia NZ. “Programmes like this allow us to attract and retain the best and brightest in the industry.”
The eligible employees were required to have twelve months tenure, submit a written presentation and ‘pitch’ themselves to the judging panel in order to be selected as a winner.
Bhana’s entry came complete with QR codes, blog, social media and video shot in the TVNZ News Studio.
“It will be a fantastic opportunity to see how ZenithOptimedia operates in a growing and dynamic large market such as China,” she says. “It will be great to represent ZO New Zealand and share with the ZO NZ team my experiences and what I have learnt.”
Phantom Billstickers is shifting its head office to 5 Maidstone Street in Grey Lynn, Auckland from November 1. The premises were previously occupied by Oggi Outdoor Advertising, which recently went into voluntary liquidation.
Jamey Holloway, Phantom’s general manager, will transfer to Auckland from Christchurch. And owners Jim and Kelly Wilson, who have recently returned from the USA, will also work out of the premises.
Other existing Phantom offices in Auckland (a second office on New North Road), Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin will still be operational.
“In preparation for the move to the premises, Phantom will have a Cree Indian medicine man go through the building and do a traditional cleansing ceremony,” says Jim Wilson. “There will be dancing.”
