Jason Momoa signs hand-painted Supergirl mural in Ponsonby

On June 12, Hollywood star Jason Momoa arrived in person to sign a hand-painted mural on Williamson Ave, Ponsonby.

Commissioned by Phantom Billstickers for Universal Pictures International New Zealand, the mural was painted by Kiwi artist Matt Griffin to promote DC Studios’ new film, Supergirl.

The visit drew dozens of fans to the street, stopped foot traffic and generated immediate national media coverage from the New Zealand Herald, Stuff and ZM.

From Ponsonby to global headlines

The piece depicts Momoa in character as Lobo the intergalactic bounty hunter he portrays in the film, alongside Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

Griffin’s paintwork is detailed, large-scale and built for Phantoms network. It is the kind of work that earns immediate attention, says Phantom Billstickers.

It holds up at distance as a visual statement and rewards a closer look with the craft and detail of a realism-scale painting.

When Momoa arrived to add his signature, curious locals and fans swarmed the site. Security kept the crowd at bay while the actor signed the mural and posed with Griffin. The scene was captured by media crews and shared widely online, turning a Ponsonby street corner into international entertainment news.

Earned media you can’t buy

The campaign did what every outdoor installation aspires to: it became a news event, not through paid amplification or media buying, but because the work itself – and the moment it created – was genuinely worth covering, says Phantom Billstickers.

Sarah Lambert, Universal Pictures head of marketing, says: “From the beginning we wanted this campaign to feel bigger than traditional outdoor – something fans could discover, engage with and feel part of.

“Phantom were incredible partners in helping bring that vision to life, taking a movie campaign and turning it into a genuine street-level entertainment moment.

“The craftsmanship of Matt Griffin’s mural was outstanding, and seeing the reaction from fans, the public and Jason himself really showed the power of creating something authentic in the real world.”

Supergirl opens in New Zealand cinemas on June 25. The mural is live on Williamson Ave, Ponsonby, and will remain on display throughout the promotional period.
