Two new team members for The Spinoff

The Spinoff is welcoming two key appointments to its commercial team, including Catherine McGregor as commercial editor and Ishal Eshna as campaign specialist.

McGregor is a foundational member of The Spinoff team – she first joined the publication in 2015 as a staff writer. She later served as deputy editor, as well as Bulletin editor, before a couple of successful stints as a contract commercial editor.

With over a decade of experience across travel writing, food journalism and content creation, McGregor brings deep editorial expertise and a strong understanding of what resonates with audiences.

Her appointment strengthens The Spinoff’s ability to create commercial content that meets the same standard as its editorial stories, helping brands connect with readers through thoughtful and engaging storytelling that drives attention and impact.

Hands-on campaign support

The Spinoff also welcomes Ishal Eshna as campaign specialist, following a three-year tenure at NZME where she progressed from digital coordinator to digital performance specialist. Her work was recognised at the 2024 IAB New Zealand Awards, where she received the Emerging Talent award.

Eshna brings end-to-end campaign management expertise and a strong background in ad operations and optimisation. Her appointment enables The Spinoff to offer more hands-on campaign support, giving clients greater visibility over performance, tighter optimisation, and more effective delivery across digital channels.

Eli Rivera, Head of Commercial at The Spinoff, says the appointments reflect a continued focus on delivering best-in-class outcomes for clients.

“We’re thrilled to have Catherine back in a permanent capacity and to welcome Ishal to the team. Catherine’s editorial expertise strengthens our ability to create standout commercial content that truly connects with our audience, while Ishal’s performance background allows us to work more closely with clients to optimise campaigns and deliver strong, measurable results.”
