The Spinoff appoints Henry Oliver as Bulletin editor
Former Metro editor Henry Oliver is joining The Spinoff as the new editor of weekday morning newsletter The Bulletin, with his first email going out on May 27.
Oliver is looking forward to writing a newsletter of his own after years as a serial subscriber to other people’s.
“I’ve always loved the directness and intimacy of email newsletters,” says Oliver. “I love that they’re opt-in, you’re getting it because you want it. And they’re reliable, they show up on schedule, so you can read them whenever you want in a context you’ve chosen. If there’s nothing in this one for you, or you’re too busy on a particular day, don’t worry – there’ll be another one with you, same time tomorrow.”
Digestible briefing
The Spinoff’s editor, Veronica Schmidt, says readers of The Bulletin are in good hands.
“Henry has tremendous talent and sizable skills, and I look forward to seeing him use both to crunch down an election year’s news into a digestible briefing.”
Oliver has written for The Guardian, North & South, and served as the editor of Idealog. He was also The Spinoff’s music editor between 2016 and 2019.
A dream job
“I was working at The Spinoff when The Bulletin launched so have been a subscriber from day one,” says Oliver.
“I’ve loved following its evolution, the different approaches and perspectives of the various editors over the years and am excited to have the opportunity to contribute to that, sharing the news of the say to tens of thousands of people every weekday morning. I’ve always been one of those people who, in social situations, will be like ‘I just read this super interesting story,’ or ‘Did you see this story this morning?’, so to get to do that every day, at scale, is kind of a dream job.”
Catherine McGregor, the outgoing Bulletin editor, is taking up a role as The Spinoff’s commercial editor.
