Fairfax Media announces new editorial director

Fairfax Media has appointed Mark Stevens to the role of editorial director.

To take on the role, Stevens will move from his current role of group editor digital and visual. It follows a career in Wellington that kicked off in the late 90s with roles as a reporter and editor at various Fairfax-owned titles.

Fairfax chief executive Sinead Boucher, who previously held the editorial director position, says the role requires the utmost understanding of journalistic integrity and professionalism and she was pleased to appoint an editor who has always championed the highest standards and values of the profession.

“Mark’s appointment reflects a long and successful career as a reporter and editor. As the editor of Stuff and then the group digital editor, he has played a leading role in building Stuff to the number one news site in the country and has an instinctive understanding of telling the stories New Zealanders want.”

About his move, Stevens added he is excited about the opportunity to strengthen the role of local and national journalism in New Zealand and be part of the company’s efforts to build a business model that would support high-quality journalism at scale into the future.

“It’s a real privilege to lead the many committed and dedicated journalists in our newsrooms in the cities and towns around New Zealand. We have so many people who are really passionate about serving their communities with the stories that are important to them, and to New Zealand society as a whole.

“We’ll continue to dig deep, to investigate and to hold the powerful to account, whether that is in a national or local context. I take the responsibilities of the role very seriously and it is essential that we champion the needs and concerns of every New Zealander.”

Stevens is also keen to continue to develop a new model of local community journalism through Neighbourly, the company’s local social network which reaches one in four New Zealand households.
