oOh!media is celebrating cycling by showcasing an art exhibition across the Locky Dock media network.
Locky Dock was set up by Big Street Bikers in 2020 as a way to use digital out of home to provide the public with free secure parking for bikes and charging stations for e-bikes. The ultimate aim? To encourage people to cycle more.
Now those screens will be displaying the work of Kiwi photographer Ans Westra as part of a nationwide exhibition called Westra Loves Bikes.
Integral street culture
It was art curator and owner of {Suite} Gallery David Alsop who first had the idea. He found it striking just how many images of people on bikes there are in Ans Westra’s collection.
Over a beer with friend and Locky Docks founder Cleve Cameron, together they decided to display those photos across the 12 Locky Dock locations.
“Ans’ images are iconic. They show us the romance and freedom of biking as integral in our street culture in Aotearoa. There’s a nostalgia to the photos that’s a reminder of how normal biking is for Kiwis,” says Cameron.
Alsop adds that Westra’s archive is rich with material that shows people what it means to be a New Zealander: “It’s importance cannot be overstated. Using her images to encourage and celebrate sustainable and healthy behaviours is something Ans would have loved.”
oOh!media has been the media partner for Locky Docks since 2023. The out of home supplier’s head, Kelly Harvey, says the team is proud to bring Westra’s images to life on the screens.
“And into the very spaces where bikes are part of everyday life – seen by cyclists as they dock and by communities as they move past.”
The exhibition images were on show at {Suite} Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau during the first week of July. They are now live on the digital screens across the Locky Dock network from Whangārei to Ōtepoti.
