Jacinda Ardern flies the Whittaker’s flag on US TV

Former primer minister Jacinda Ardern has put Whittaker’s Chocolate in the global spotlight following an interview on US TV.

She talked with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show about her time leading Aotearoa, her new memoir and documentary.

About halfway through, they take a brief pause to discuss chocolate. The discussion came following Stewart popping back stage to meet Ardern before the show.

He says he was treated to a “lovely display of New Zealand chocolates”, but seems to struggle to recall the brand name.

Never fear – Ardern deftly whips out from her pocket the packaging from a block of Whittaker’s Hokey Pokey Crunch.

“Oh, for God’s sake,” Stewart quips, as the audience and Ardern burst out laughing.

Great chocolate, New Zealand

“I couldn’t put the whole block, it would have melted in my trousers,” says Ardern, “but I did bring it.”

Stewart replies the chocolate is delicious: “But I didn’t know if I was supposed to say, ‘wow, New Zealand, nice’.”

Ardern then encourages him to say that but this time directly to the camera. He obliges, looking straight into the camera, and saying: “Wow, New Zealand, great chocolate.”

A unique take on shrinkflation

Meanwhile, Whittaker’s has announced new, smaller packaging for its Chocolate Pods, aiming for an over 30% CO2 reduction across the entire lifecyle of the product.

Chief marketing officer Soraya Cottin says reducing packaging waste but not shrinking the product or compromising quality is Whittaker’s unique take on shrinkflation.

“At Whittaker’s, our commitment to quality underpins everything we do from using only the finest, ethically sourced ingredients, to continous improvement in sustainability.”

The cardboard outer sleeve and the inner box of Whittaker’s Chocolate Pods box is fully recyclable. The pods within are wrapped in compostable material.
