NZ Herald editor-in-chief Tim Murphy set to pass on the red pen

Tim Murphy, the  editor-in-chief of the NZ Herald has decided to step down after a 30 years with the publication. This announcement brings an end to Murphy’s three-year stint in the role that he took on after serving as an NZ Herald editor for ten years.

An NZME spokesperson told StopPress that Murphy took the decision to move on, and this is further supported by his official statement contained in the release.

“I’ve had a long and thoroughly rewarding time leading our journalism – with a tremendous group of journalists and friends – in an era of real industry upheaval,” Murphy was quoted as saying. “We have bold plans to keep the Herald at the forefront of news, sport and entertainment and I believe now is the right time for another voice to lead editorial in all the good things that NZME is planning.”

Murphy always Tweeted that he felt it was the right time for a change.

NZME chief executive Jane Hastings said that Murphy would “step down with [NZME’s] very best wishes and leave the company on June 30.”

“Tim has guided the NZ Herald through some of the most dynamic years in the paper’s history including changing format from broadsheet to compact in 2012,” added Hastings. “Tim’s knowledge of journalism and the critical role that news creators play in shaping the communities in which we live has been outstanding”

When appointed to the editorial position in 2001, he became the youngest person to edit the publication. And he also leaves with his name on the Herald’s hall of fame as the combined duration of his editorial roles equate to the third longest tenure by an editorial leader in the publication’s history.

Current NZ Herald editor, Shayne Currie, will be taking on an expanded editorial role across all Herald brands.

“I am really excited about our plans for the newsroom of the future,” he said in the release. “Tim has been a terrific mentor and has set the foundation from which we will build.”
