Motion Sickness’ new home wins at architectural awards

Motion Sickness‘ office in Auckland has won the Workplace Award at the national 2025 Interior Awards, hosted by cross-platform publisher AGM on June 26.

Now in its 14th year, the Interior Awards’ sole focus is celebrating New Zealand-designed projects that push the limits of interior and spatial design as well as the talented designers and teams behind these ideas.

The awards recognise excellence in interior architecture and interior design across 10 categories – retail, hospitality, education, healthcare and wellness, civic, workplace up to 1000m2, workplace over 1000m2, residential, residential kitchen, community impact and emerging design professional.

Almost 400 people attended the awards evening, held at St-Matthew-in-the-City in Auckland.

Channels creative voice

The independent agency moved into the new space in Grey Lynn at the end of September 2024. It was designed in collaboration with Auckland-based interior design studio Wonder Group.

At the awards, it was recognised as the winner for the Workplace up to 1000m2 Award with fellow Auckland agency PH Digital named as runner up.

Of Motion Sickness’ space, the judges said the office channels the company’s distinctive creative voice into a richly cinematic interior.

“Soft hues and layered spaces set the scene, while the interplay of slick finishes and vintage pieces reflects a culture that values both polish and personality. A palette of soft blues and rosy oranges, paired with rose-tinted glazing, evokes a sense of nostalgia that feels both fresh and familiar, while a seamless shift from focused work to vibrant social settings reflects the spirited, youthful nature of the studio and the ingenuity of the design team.”

This year’s awards jury was made up of Murali Bhasker (Boon), Ceili Murphy (Architectus), Sam Griffin (Ctrl-Space), Natasha Markham (MAUD) and convenor Amanda Harkness (deputy editor at Architecture NZ).

The Supreme Award winner, Palimpsest House, received $6,000, the Community award winner, Harbour Hospice received $3,000 and the Emerging Design Professional, Matt Reid of Warren and Mahoney, received $1,500.
