Whopper Blackout

It was a dark time for France. In 1997, the burger giant closed its 39 restaurants across the country after it failed to make a profit. Its return in 2012 was enough to bring a tear to the eye.

According to a new campaign featuring a seven minute mockumentary, the French were Burger King obsessed and the restaurant closures sent the country into a frenzy. The Whopper was traded on the black market and smuggled across the boarder. Those lucky enough to get their hands on the burger were faced with the challenge to ration.

Burger King returned to France in a partnership with the Autogrill group in 2012. The first restaurant opened in Marseilles airport.
