‘Tis the season for ice creamy cohesion

Youtube Video

Next year is the 75th anniversary of Tip Top. So, as part of the celebrations that are sure to come in the new year (and to herald the arrival of the prime time ice cream consumption period sometimes known as summer), Colenso BBDO and up and coming Sweet Shop directors Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland have gone to town—and country—and made eight almost documentary style, nostalgia-inducing commercials that are filled to bursting with all the ingredients of the classic Kiwi summer.

The two directors, who have done three spots for The Sweet Shop this year and were lauded for their short film ‘Six Dollar Fifty Man‘, which won accolades at both Cannes and Sundance film festivals, say they grew up with Tip Top so ice cream was a subject matter close to their hearts. But the fact that all the commercials needed to be filmed in just five days certainly put the pressure on.

“In a sense it’s pretty easy to make an ad for a favourite product that filled our bellies as kids but the sheer size of this project was a challenge. Thankfully Colenso were very open to our ideas and really trusted us to pull this off, which thankfully we did … With a large campaign comes more challenges and so to finish up with a series of ads that we’re both proud of is a good result. And that Colenso and Tip Top are also pleased. If the clients and agency are happy, then so are we.” Awwww.
