New Zealand’s design students have been putting in quite the winning performance as of late, hauling in some top international awards. First up, Media Design School. Having recently picked up a double-whammy at the 2011 Honolulu Film Awards, the school continues its winning streak with four of its students each winning a gong in the ‘Comprehensive Identity Program’ category as part of the Brand New Awards in the U.S.
Held by Under Consideration, a network and enterprise dedicated to the progress of the graphic design profession, the Brand New Awards celebrate the best identity work to emerge in 2010. And just to be a little different, entries for the awards must be printed and submitted via good ‘ole snail mail.
Cast under the watchful eyes of a five person judging panel, the students’ winning work will also be published in a special design book and iPad publication later this year.

Lawlor’s work continued its winning streak, picking up second spot in the Visual Design category as part of the prestigious 2011 Australasian Student Design Awards. But it wasn’t the only Kiwi winner in the awards.
2011 Australasian Student Design Awards winners:
Massey University’s Emma Hickey followed Lawlor in the Visual Design category, coming in at third place for her work ‘Threatened Species’.
Also from Massey University, Mercia Tawhiri-Kerr picked up first place in the Exhibition / Display Design category, for her work ‘Te Tiriti o Waitangi’.
AUT’s Michale Grobelny came out tops in the Industruial Design category for his Clean Waves project. Fellow AUT student Jeremy Best picked up the award for second in that same category, for his Pedal Car project.
In the Furniture Design category, AUT’s Mark Wu came second for his work titled ‘valet’.
Catherine Cookson of Massey University triumphed in the Textile Design category for ‘Kasuri’, meanwhile Sophie Rzpecky, also of Massey University, picked up third spot in the same category for her ‘Luminous Weave’ piece.
