Shortland Street celebrates 30 years alongside Kiwi businesses

This Wednesday, Aotearoa’s most iconic television series has its 30-year anniversary.

New Zealand’s longest running soap kicked off its 30th birthday celebrations last night with ‘The Big Shorty Shout Out’ airing on TVNZ 2.

The TVNZ Blacksand & Partnerships team thought the best way to celebrate was with an exclusive ad break takeover, thanking some of the Kiwi brands that have been there alongside Shorty throughout the years. So, TVNZ partnered with nine advertisers to showcase their brands in a way only TV can do.

Breaking the fourth wall for viewers, the ad break takeover featured shout outs to brands weaved into the ‘behind the scenes storyline’ while Shortland Street characters interacted with cast, crew, and surprise guests along the way.

From McDonald’s delivering Bic Macs for the crew to an ASB sponsored St Johns ambulance behind the scenes. Leigh Hart even ran a Hellers sausage sizzle. Inferring scenarios with TVNZ talent such as Simon Dallow and Matty McLean was the name of the game, ensuring we could jam pack magical moments into every corner of the Shortland Street set.

The result was an epic three-minute piece of content that broke the mould for advertisers allowing them to be a part of a NZ media first.

Harnessing the power of the TVNZ network – the magic will be extended to TVNZ 1 through Breakfast, Seven Sharp and 1 News at Six, TVNZ OnDemand live stream and all social channels this week.

TVNZ Commercial Director Jodi O’Donnell says: “We are absolutely thrilled to see ‘The Big Shorty Shout Out’ come to life. The campaign has been a labour of love between the TVNZ Blacksand & Partnerships team, alongside nine advertisers who came together to celebrate 30 years of our iconic soap. We are grateful to our clients and agency partners who put their trust in us to pull off a first-in-market innovation, and we could not be happier with the result!”

The nine participating advertisers are:

  1. ASB/St John
  2. Briscoes
  3. Cadbury
  4. Hellers
  5. McDonald’s
  6. Mitsubishi
  7. Resene
  8. Skinny
  9. State Insurance
