MasterCard gets Dan Carter to dish out a surprise of his own to young Kiwi rugby players

We’ve already seen Dan Carter get a surprise (and possibly even shed a tear or two) when MasterCard brought a few members of his schoolboy team across to England for the Rugby World Cup. Now he’s the one doing the surprising.

Aligned with MasterCard’s global Priceless Surprises campaign and as part of its sponsorship of the Rugby World Cup, the brand “sought out to help Eden Wizards under 9 football club with their first ever tackling session”. The young boys see their coach walking in wearing a tackle suit, but they pull a bit of a switcheroo and put Carter in the firing line on the field. As expected, given his hero status amongst New Zealanders young and old, mouths are open and eyes are wide when he reveals himself.

We sought out to help the Eden Wizard’s Under 9 football club with their first ever tackling session, but they weren’t expecting this… #PricelessSurprises #RWC2015

Carter is a MasterCard ambassador, along with a few other rugby players, and some did question one of his tweets following the reveal of the first spot, which was created by McCann London. But, as Damien Venuto wrote last week, there seems to be a general understanding from the public that sports stars make their money from commercial arrangements such as these and the ASA is yet to receive an official complaint about the non-use of the #ad hashtag.
