Flag it: Ogilvy nabs Ad of the Month award for Rebel Sport

Ogilvy & Mather took out the July Newspaper Ad of the Month award for its topical Rebel Sport ad ‘National Pride’, scooping up $500 for the win.

Judges Rob Longuet-Higgins (Barnes, Catmur & Friends) and Peter Wujkowski (Geometry Global) agreed it “immediately stood out on the judging table with its strong visual lead idea”, but said its success was ultimately because “it was topical on two fronts”.

As there was no winner last month, Ogilvy receive the “jackpotted” prize of $500.

The ad features a yellow, black and white New Zealand flag and a blue, yellow and black New Zealand flag, symbolising the Super Rugby final Highlanders vs. Hurricanes game last month, as well as referencing the current debate over the potential redesign of the New Zealand flag.

An Ogilvy & Mather spokesperson said:

“With the eyes of a nation focused squarely on the Super 15 Rugby final between the Hurricanes and the Highlanders, Rebel Sport saw a timely opportunity to celebrate this all Kiwi clash. Taking a humourous look at the current flag debate and appealing to our love of the code the ad appeals contextually on two levels and places Rebel Sport right on the national pulse.”

A News Works release says entries are closing soon for the 2015 Newspaper Advertising awards. “As well as the highly desirable $10,000 cash prize for the 2015 Ad of the Year, there are also six other categories: best topical, best digital, best craft (art), best craft (copy), best media thinking and best News Brand campaign.”

The Newspaper Advertising Ad of the Year awards were established in 2005, and last year’s winner was DDB for its VW ad, the second year in a row it had won the award.

This year’s creative and media judging panels include a number of leading creative and media directors, along with our international judge Colin Jeffrey from David & Goliath, LA, the release says.

The release says it is easy to enter the awards, and that any ad that has appeared on a New Zealand newspaper website or app, or in any print edition between July 1 2014 and June 30 2015 is eligible to enter.
