ANZ sees shift to mobile as new app gets traction

ANZ expects a big rise in the number of its customers using mobile devices for banking, with more than a third already preferring mobile over PC-based internet banking.

The bank recently released its goMoney app for Apple and Android, which has hit nearly 86,000 downloads from Apple’s app store and almost 31,000 from Google Play.

Launched last Friday, the free app held the top spot for several days across categories on iTunes here. “At this stage roughly 35 percent of our customers are using mobile versus our internet banking channel,” ANZ says. “We expect this to increase dramatically with the introduction of the new apps and ongoing feature enhancements.”

Among the new features are improved bill payment functionality, increased payments limits, a function to view and delete upcoming payment in the iOS version, a PIN number and a pay-to-mobile feature in the Android version, says ANZ.

ANZ’s managing director of retail and business banking, Fred Ohlsson, says the bank took on board customer suggestions for new features after ANZ and National Bank brought their mobile banking systems together a year ago.

ANZ says it expects to make more security enhancements and is working on a new mobile payments solution for businesses. It wouldn’t say what payments solution was.

The app was developed in partnership with Fiserv (formerly MCom) in just under six months. During this time ANZ tested the app with customers and held a month long pilot among staff.

US company Fiserv acquired Kiwi mobile payments software developer MCom in 2011.
