Rico goes gangsta, as Snoop gets his freak on for Air New Zealand

Youtube VideoAir New Zealand’s suave yet moderately offensive travelling mascot Rico has already laid down some beats with a couple of Wellingtonian musos. But he’s taken his music career up a few notches recently after recording his debut track ‘Hello Sunshine’ in Los Angeles. And it features a pretty special guest who’s also earned a reputation as something of a ladies man: Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. AKA Tha Doggfather AKA Snoop Dogg.

Rico recently took a trip to Los Angeles—lounging on the economy Skycouch, of course—to sit by the pool, sip on some gin and juice, drop some double entendres, film a music video and collaborate with Snoop on the track, which will be released a few days before his latest album, ‘Doggumentary’ is launched.

Air New Zealand general manager marketing Mike Tod says Snoop Dogg and Rico combined have millions of followers in social media and performing a song together came naturally.

“Both have courted controversy in their careers and both love to sing—arguably one better than the other, but still, it makes for some light entertainment.”

While the mainstream media have had a bit of fun laying into Rico and questioning the national carrier’s need to fly the sleazy skies, Snoop seems to approve of the furry lothario and the airline’s marketing strategy (possibly because, as a consummate capitalist, he charged them a fortune to record the track).

“He’s funny. He’s a little bit edgy and a little bit naughty, which is a nice change for an industry that is known for having some of the dullest marketing known to mankind,” he says.

The pair completed the song and music video at Wavaflow Studios in Hollywood, previously owned by famed 1940s singer/actress Carmen Miranda.

Snoop is about to head on tour to Australia and London and he’ll be following the Air New Zealand routes to each destination (possibly wearing his All Blacks kit on the way, as he did in the music video).
