CAANZ chief executive Paul Head this morning announced that Simon Lendrum, managing director of JWT New Zealand, has been elected to the position of CAANZ president, which was vacated by DDB’s Sandy Moore after his recent resignation.
Following in the footsteps of the well liked and respected Moore won’t be easy, but Head is confident that the CAANZ board has made the right decision and that Lendrum will be equal to the task.
“I’m delighted that Simon has been elected by the Board to lead CAANZ. Since joining the Board he has made a very strong contribution to the organisation. He takes over at a time when what constitutes advertising becomes harder to define, creativity takes ever more forms, and the need for ideas is stronger than ever,” says Head.
Lendrum, who joined the CAANZ board in 2012, was appointed as the managing director of JWT in June 2010. Since his appointment, the agency, which this year celebrates its 150th anniversary, has doubled in size and won significant new business.
He started his career in UK, where he initally joined BMP DDB London as a graduate recruit in 1995. By 2003, he was appointed to the BMP board and took charge of the agency’s graduate recruitment and training programme.
In 2004, Lendrum and family packed things up in London and moved to New Zealand, where he took up the position of general manager of Ogilvy NZ, a role he held for over five years before moving across to JWT.
Given that CAANZ places significant emphasis on the development of the nation’s young talent, Lendrum will be able to draw on his on-hand experience to further the programmes already in place. In a statement addressing his appointment as the CAANZ president, Lendrum was complimentary of work CAANZ had already done in this field.
“The intern programmes and training opportunities developed in recent years have ensured there’s a steady flow of brilliant young talent entering the industry, and they are rewarded appropriately.”
He also commended the efforts of Head and the other members of the board for their continued contributions to the industry.
“Paul and his team are dogged in the defence of the right to advertise, and have been effective in ensuring that a business voice is heard by policy-makers. In addition, Paul has ensured the focus of our awards shows is on the contribution that great work makes to business success.”
Lendrum will officially take up his new position on 16 April.
