Fairfax brings one of its boys home as Campbell Mitchell takes up marketing reins—UPDATED

Fairfax Media New Zealand has appointed Campbell Mitchell, most recently the general manager digital, marketing and retail sales at The Australian, to the role of marketing director.

UPDATE: Communications and marketing manager Nicola Igusa has been managing the group marketing portfolio in the absence of group sales and marketing manager Sandra King, who departed late last year (King recently resurfaced in a content marketing role for PPR). Igusa’s title hasn’t changed. The person in her role has always had both a comms and group marketing/trade marketing role, reporting to the marketing lead on the leadership team, which will be Mitchell from 4 November.

Acting managing director Andrew Boyle says the organisation is looking forward to welcoming Mitchell as part of the revamped leadership team. And after that shake-up at the top, Fairfax is now shifting its attention to the rest of the company.

“Having someone of Campbell’s calibre, with experience across a broad variety of roles, encompassing editorial, sales, marketing and digital is exactly what we need as we reshape our business for the future,” Boyle said in a release.

Campbell will be responsible for leading, developing and directing the consumer marketing, research and insight function for the business. This will include formulating and owning subscriber, retail and digital marketing strategy, research programmes, corporate communications and agency trade marketing (it works with The Collective and Open, which were behind the speech bubble-themed Creating Conversations campaign.

“I’m very excited to be able to take on this role at a time of enormous change in the media industry,” Mitchell says. “Working alongside my experienced and passionate colleagues as we redefine Fairfax for the future is an opportunity I relish. It’ll be great to rejoin the Fairfax family, and to return to New Zealand.”

Campbell has worked for Fairfax Media New Zealand in the past, both in editorial and marketing roles, including stints as a journalist for Sunday News and The Dominion, chief reporter at the Waikato Times and marketing and newspaper sales manager at Fairfax Sundays.

His return to New Zealand follows several years in Australia. He has also held senior sales and marketing positions for The Australian, NewsLocal and Cumberland Courier Newspapers in Sydney and last year he was PANPA’s Marketer of the Year for the role he played in transferring News Limited’s Cumberland Newspapers to the NewsLocal brand.

He also won the Digital Sales category (300,000+) in the 2013 International News Media Association awards for a paid content campaign for The Australian

He will begin his new role on 4 November 2013.
