Contenders revealed for revamped Magazine Awards

The Magazine Publishers Association has selected the finalists for this year’s Magazine Awards from 240 entries, up from 228 last year.

Fairfax, Bauer Media Group and Tangible Media are well represented with 39, 36 and 30 finalist nods respectively. Cuisine scored the highest number of spots with 12, followed by Idealog on nine and NZ Listener with eight.

NZ Geographic, NZ Life & Leisure and Woman’s Day each have seven finalist placings.

When it called for this year’s entries the MPA’s awards committee said it had spent six months reviewing the awards categories and entry documents “to ensure that they remain relevant and current to the changing world of magazine publishing”.

Former executive director John McClintock says it’s a “totally different awards programme this year” with fewer award categories.

“In the latter part of my term as executive director, I said they needed to take it by the bootlaces and shake it up. From that the committee said there needs to be a relevance by the awards that relates to what’s happening in 2013.

“We’re looking to show excellence with good peer review documentation.”

Bauer Media, the company that acquired Australasian firm ACP last year, is a first time entrant. Its titles include Woman’s Day, The Australian Women’s Weekly, Next, Taste, Metro and North & South.

The awards will be held on 26 September at Auckland’s Q Theatre. Tickets are on sale from here.
