Last night at the Aotea centre, newspaper folk from across the land gathered to show off their wares to media and creative agencies and guest speaker Peter Thomson presented a fairly convincing case for the future viability of newspapers. And this year, the newspaper expo was topped off by the announcement of the newly rejigged Newspaper Advertising Awards, with Saatchi & Saatchi walking away with the $10,000 prize and the ad of the year honour for its very practical Valentines Day ad for Tui.

Seven different categories were included this year in an effort to broaden the amount of work that could be recognised and reference the growing role of digital for publishers and advertisers.
To celebrate this year’s day of romance, a bunch of foldable DIY roses was included in every edition of the New Zealand Herald, which meant the sensitive new age Tui drinkers were able to “keep [their]dosh for a dozen of another kind.”

Special Group took home three awards this year, with its work on The Simpson’s 500th episode campaign winning the new category of Best Media Thinking, its mash-up banner for Four winning best digital, and MediaWorks TV’s Four winning brand of the year for using newspapers and their associated digital brands most effectively. It also received a highly commended in the topical section for its ‘Send a paper’ initiative for News Works NZ, which now has a snazzy new website.
Barnes, Catmur & Friends was awarded a highly commended in the big award of the night for its Boundary Road Brewery ad featuring the names of the 999 people who decided on its Chosen One variety. And the same ad also won the best craft — art award.
Saatchi & Saatchi’s Tui ad also took victory in the topical category and a highly commended in best craft — art.
Colenso BBDO took the craft – copy victory and received a highly commended for its DB Export ads Sean and Bevan.
