Paul Henry to join TVNZ board

The Government has appointed broadcaster Paul Henry as a director on the board of TVNZ.

The news follows an announcment earlier in June that Henry will be the host of a four episode special of The Chase New Zealand.

Henry resigned from TVNZ following a series of onscreen controversies in 2010. Since then he has worked in Australia, before returning to Aotearoa as a TV show host – both on game shows, like Would I Lie to You?, and on his own current affairs show, The Paul Henry Show, as well as being involved in the launch of the former radio network Today FM.

Passionate understanding

Media and communications minister Paul Goldsmith announced Henry’s appointment to the board in a statement on June 27, speaking to the latter’s tenure in the industry both here in Aotearoa and overseas.

“He has a deep and passionate understanding of the sector and will enhance the board’s insight and strategic decision making,” says Goldsmith.

He adds, “I am aware Mr Henry is set to host The Chase New Zealand. However, I am advised any perceived conflict can be effectively managed.”

A stronger direction

There will likely be more changes to come, with three directors from TVNZ – Linda Clark, Meg Matthews and John Quirk – and one from RNZ’s board – Sina Wendt – up for renewal or replacement this week.

In his statement about TVNZ, Goldsmith says he is reappointing Quirk, but has said nothing about Clark or Matthews.

Media Insider’s Shayne Currie reports the Government’s changes to the boards at both TVNZ and RNZ reflect a desire for new thinking and a stronger change of direction – including for TVNZ to start returning financial dividends again, and for RNZ to lift it’s radio ratings.
