Volvo shines a light on cyclists

After some high-profile accidents, there’s plenty of attention on cycle safety at the moment—and some positive signs that the powers that be are taking heed and starting to create cyclist friendly infrastructure in our bigger cities. Various campaigns have tried to get drivers to look for cyclists—and tried to get cyclists to make sure they can be seen—and now Volvo has developed a cool new product that will help both sides: Life Paint.

Volvo, long a big advocate of safety, has stated that a goal of no-one dying in a new Volvo by 2020. And it’s also trying to stop anyone being hit by one, so it created the reflective, water-based, washable paint with fellow Swedish company Albedo100.

“Life Paint is a unique spray, different to other reflective products on the market,” said Anders Wellving from Albedo100. “When you apply it to a surface the reflective particles will stick together with a special adhesive making the spray invisible by day, but light up at night in the glare of headlights.”

A single coat of the ‘paint’ lasts up to one week, so there will be plenty of spraying required (perhaps a permanent version is next cab off the rank) and it can be used on anything from dog leads to bike frames. It’s currently available in the UK and if it’s successful Volvo plans to roll it out internationally.

Speaking of cycling, here’s a great little documentary about how the Dutch created their cycle culture. And, in a similar fashion to Life Paint, it all started with a determination to deal to road fatalities.
