Uber hits one million trips

Uber has now reached one million trips in New Zealand since it launched 18 months ago and to celebrate, it’s offering its users two free rides tomorrow and has released information on its impact in the country.

The service is available in Auckland and Wellington and in those one million trips has covered more than one million kilometres.

Over the past year and a half information from Uber says it’s made point-to-point more accessible and affordable for more Kiwis, with the average fare up to 30 percent cheaper than comparable forms of transport which to date has saved New Zealanders nearly $4 million.

But this feat of one million trips also means one million drives lost by the taxi industry, and we’re sure Uber will only continue to grow from here.

Uber says it’s also created 1,500 jobs in New Zealand and hundreds more partners are signing up every month. “What’s better, we’ve created hundreds of jobs for partners from areas of high unemployment. In fact, in Auckland more than 20 percent of partners come from postcodes where the unemployment rate is above 7.5 percent … A typical Uber driver partner works 20 hours a week and earns $27 per hour in fares.”
