Tips on how to crush it in the Young Lions Competition

The Cannes Young Lions Competition provides a high profile opportunity for young creative professionals to show the industry what they are made of and build up their reputation. But it takes some serious skill to stand out from the crowd.

The Commercial Communications Council sat down with FCB Co-Chief Creative Officer Leisa Wall, a former Young Lions competition winner, to get some insider tips on how to crush the competition. Here’s what she had to say:

  1. Keep it simple: Don’t overthink it. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Leisa emphasized that a great idea is more important than flashy visuals or complicated executions. Focus on the core message and make sure it’s strong.
  2. Enter everything you can: It’s a great way to build your profile and gain experience. Leisa suggested entering as many competitions as possible, even if you don’t think you have a shot at winning. It’s a chance to get your work in front of a wider audience and receive feedback from industry professionals.
  3. Get inspired: Look for creativity everywhere, even if it’s just a few days before the deadline! Leisa shared that some of her best ideas came to her at the last minute. She advised young creatives to stay curious and always be on the lookout for inspiration, whether it’s in a museum, a book, or even a funny meme.
  4. Take risks: Be bold and daring with your ideas. It could make the difference between a good campaign and a great one. Leisa encouraged young creatives to take risks and not be afraid to push boundaries. After all, the Young Lions Competition is all about showcasing your potential and standing out from the crowd.

The Comms Council also reached out to some other industry professionals for their top tips on crushing the competition. Here’s what they had to say:

  • Get to the point: Keep your message clear and concise. Judges don’t have time to read lengthy entries.
  • Know your audience: Make sure your idea resonates with the target audience and the brand you’re working for.
  • Collaborate: Work with a partner or team to bounce ideas off each other and create something truly unique.
  • Be authentic: Don’t try to be something you’re not. Embrace your own style and personality in your work.

The Young Lions Competition is a chance to showcase your creativity, connect with industry professionals, and gain valuable experience. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to crushing the competition and making a name for yourself in the advertising industry.
