The Pond ensures contractors are ready for the post-Covid world

The Pond has been taking steps during the current Covid-19 crisis to ensure its represented freelance contractors emerge from lockdown fighting fit and ready to take on the world.

“As New Zealand’s foremost recruitment agency for independent contractors in the creative, digital, and marketing industries, we take our stewardship of our self-employed contractors’ careers very seriously,” says The Pond Recruitment Director, Will Gregory.

“During the lockdown, we called each and every one of the contractors we represent to check on their financial and emotional health, offer advice, and share with them our positive insights into how we see the market bouncing back in the next few months.”

The Pond also passed on offers from enableMe – financial personal trainers, (a Pond client) giving them access to free financial resilience webinars and a discount on an initial personal financial consultation.

“We were thrilled to pass on these offers from enableMe because we wanted to help our 500-odd contactors on the books upskill themselves financially so they can emerge from the pandemic fighting fit and ready for new opportunities in the post-Covid world,” says Will.

Becoming financially resilient is more important than ever, especially for self-employed contactors, according to enableMe’s founder Hannah McQueen.

“In ordinary circumstances many freelancers and independent contractors can float along fine without addressing the inefficiencies in their personal and business finances, but when their income drops suddenly because of an unforeseen event – like a global pandemic – those issues can quickly come home to roost,” says Hannah.

“enableMe is working with many contractors and sole traders to help them survive, stabilise, and optimise their finances amid some of the most uncertain times many of us will ever see.”

Despite the uncertainty, The Pond is expecting an increase in demand for freelancers and contractors as projects and fixed term contracts kick-start again after the lockdown.

“Already we’re seeing strong demand for quality and skilled contractor resources who can work remotely, but we expect this trend to end soon,” says Will.

“With Level 2 and Level 1 on the way, agencies, corporate marketing departments, and tech businesses will no doubt quickly revert to the use of independent contractors to produce momentum, provide flexibility, and get key projects to market fast.”
