Samsung’s very special delivery

Virtual reality is something Facebook bet big on with its acquisition of Oculus Rift for $2 billion. Google has also entered the fray with its very clever, low-cost solution Cardboard. And Samsung is also onboard with its Gear VR, which it’s showing off with a clip showing a dad experiencing the birth of his third child from afar and a bunch of Aussies diving with sharks in an unexpected location. 

As it says on the YouTube blurb: “Sometimes barriers like distance keep people from being part of experiences that no one wants to miss. So we decided to help two people come together in a completely new way to let them share one of life’s most profound moments. Welcome to the world’s first live virtual reality birth using the Samsung Gear VR.” 

Virtual has long been a poor cousin to reality (and, as this story about the rise of Oculus Rift and this entertaining campaign shows, there are a number of reasons for that). But the gap is closing, as evidenced by this rather visceral and quite hilarious response from an Oculus Rift user in Russia. And while there’s still no substitute for being there, sadly that’s not always possible, even for something as important as the birth of a child, so the clip does a good job of showing the immersive qualities of the technology (when you’ve got the required extras to make something like this happen). 

Earlier, Samsung aimed to prove that its VR tech can “make you feel like you’ve entered another world” by building a dive shop in Alice Springs. 

As the old phrase goes, if it exists, there’s porn for it. And that’s certainly the case for VR. So if you were wondering what that’s like, thankfully Complex has already tested out its performance (pretty safe for work).
