Orange is the New Black hits one million streams in a month

What works on Netflix also works for TVNZ. Or at least that’s what the recent on-demand statistics for Orange is the New Black suggest.

Over the month of September the first and second seasons of the hit dramedy, a Netflix original, were streamed by Kiwis via TVNZ Ondemand over a million times.

This huge contribution took the total streams for the month to 5.8 million, surpassing the previous record of 5.7 million first set in April and equalled in July.

Shortland Street, Home and Away and Coronation Street took the the next three spots, showing that Kiwis still have a strong appetite for soaps. My Kitchen Rules completed the top five, and this was followed by the latest Nigel Latta series.

In August, TVNZ announced that all episodes of both the first and second series of the hit show would be made available via TVNZ Ondemand, and that this would be followed by a TV2 broadcast of the second season on Monday nights at 11.30pm from 3 November.

When the box sets were first released, TVNZ’s general manager of programming John Kelly said that this unconventional step was taken in an effort to give viewers a service that meets their demands.

“We want as many Kiwis as possible to be able to view our great content—whether that be on TV One, TV2 or on Ondemand,” he said at the time. “We’ve been trialling the premiere of carefully selected titles on Ondemand for some time now. As Orange Is the New Black will play in a later time slot on TV2, we are looking at this as an opportunity to further expose this series. We’re happy  that we have been able to put up all episodes in one go.”

And given of the success this has garnered, audiences are likely to be treated to more TVNZ box sets in the future.
