Nielsen online rankings reveal New Zealand's biggest websites—UPDATED

Nielsen has released the sites visited by the most New Zealanders in April and no surprise, Google and Facebook take first and second place respectively.

However, in a battle that's harder to predict, Stuff had more unique visitors than NZ Herald as it drew in 2,215,000 New Zealanders to be ranked in fifth place. It was also the first New Zealand website to make the list.

In seventh place, NZ Herald saw 1,949,000 New Zealanders visit. Between the new sites, Microsoft drew in 2,088,000 New Zealanders in April while its competitor Apple drew only drew 817,000.

In eighth, ninth and tenth places, New Zealand Government and Trade Me, Wikipedia and Yahoo follow behind.

Further down the list are TVNZ and MediaWorks, with the former reaching a unique audience of 921,000, ahead of Newshub on 859,000.Newshub on 859,000.

Despite belonging to the competing broadcasters, the two websites cannot be compared as is home to 1 News Now as well as TVNZ OnDemand. On the other hand, is a news site while is Mediaworks' on demand platform.

According to Nielsen's online ratings for April, 533,000 New Zealanders visited TVNZ to watch content on demand, while 537,000 visited to consume the news.

The figures also show had a unique audience of 273,000 New Zealanders.

Continuing down the top 20 list, follows behind the broadcasters with an audience of 854,000. That number was no doubt contributed to by Easter travellers looking to see if Cyclone Cook was going to interrupt their plans.

Inland Revenue’s website would have also seen a boost in April with people applying for tax refunds. It made 12th place with a unique audience of 960,000.

The Warehouse was the only retailer to make it into the top 20, achieving a unique audience of 919,000, followed ANZ on 914,000 (it was also the only bank to make the list).

Not included in those top websites, but still trumpeting its horn for its April performance is The Spinoff. Editor Duncan Greive, tweeted about a "ridiculous" month for the magazine site as its New Zealand visitors reached over 500,000 in April. When combined with its international visitors, it achieved 973,797 visitors.

According to Nielsen's figures, The Spinoff's unique April audience from New Zealand was 245,000—which was a huge growth on the 149,000 recorded by Nielsen in March.

The finalists for the 2019 Axis Awards have been announced and it’s Colenso BBDO leading the way with 64 mentions, followed by FCB on 55 and DDB on 51.
