More than half of New Zealanders now own a smartphone (54 percent), a lofty feat in technology terms which puts us almost on par with the US which is sitting on 56 percent, according to the latest Our Mobile Planet study from Google.
The IPSOS MediaCT-conducted study – which interviewed 1,000 New Zealanders between 18-64 online – has New Zealand trailing the penetration in Australia (65 percent) however it shows a 10 percent leap from the previous year.
Smartphones continue to play a massive role in how people interact with businesses. Almost two-thirds of smartphone owners have researched products or services from their device, while a third have made a purchase straight from their mobile
Nine out of ten smartphone owners surveyed saying they search for local business, and almost the same (87 percent) say they’ve taken action as a result. According to the research, almost 1 million New Zealanders are searching for local information on their smartphones every day
“As consumers migrate to mobile, Kiwi businesses need to follow,” says New Zealand country manager Tony Keusgen.
“It all comes down to basics. Know your customers and make sure they can find you on mobile devices. Otherwise you will keep missing out on sales leads.”
All in all, Google’s latest mobile survey spanned across 47 countries. The results will be made available on Monday 29 July.
