Meet the Mighties: Vaughan Schwass

The 2015 TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards are ready to be collected. So if you feel you’ve performed heroic feats of marketing over the past year, take a leaf out of Vaughan Schwass’ book, submit an entry before the deadline of 5pm Friday and you could also be Mighty Marketing material.

If you were collecting your own set of Mighty Marketers, whether from this market or from around the world, who would you choose and why?

Matt O’Toole – the president of Reebok – for his vision and refocusing of the Reebok brand back to fitness. Taking a leadership position in forming partnerships to cement the Reebok position and grow partner brands like CrossFit, Spartan and of course Les Mills

Sam Morgan—the founder of Trade Me—for identifying a market opportunity and through perseverance and skill built a new market

What are some of your favourite local or international marketing initiatives? And why do they stand out?

In the fitness category, we have seen the emergence of boutique and often high-end fitness clubs that position themselves in a very modern and non-fitness style. I particularly like the work of Soul Cycle, 1Rebel and bigger chain Equinox. We’ve also taken a very fresh approach with Les Mills Grit, our Millennial focused HIIT (high intensity interval training) product.

How has marketing changed in your career? And what skills do you require to be a Mighty Marketer these days?

I qualified as a quantity surveyor but stepped into marketing pretty quickly as it’s such a dynamic career, unlike the former (sorry to all the QSs out there). I particularity love building new products from an insight to execution and ultimately commercial success.

You’ve won plenty of industry accolades in your time. What are the benefits of collecting your own award, either for your own career or for the industry as a whole?

Its fantastic to have the industry recognition achievement. For many marketers you don’t get to benchmark your efforts against others and awards are one great way of doing that.
