Five years of American Express’ Shop Small campaign to back local business

Kiwis are being encouraged to back their local small businesses as American Express launches its annual Shop Small campaign from the start of October, with rewards for both shoppers and businesses that participate.

Now in its fifth year in New Zealand, Shop Small is a nationwide movement that celebrates the
contribution small businesses make to the New Zealand economy and encourages consumers to
support them, providing outstanding rewards to shoppers along the way.

For six weeks from 1 October to 10 November, eligible American Express Card Members who shop at
participating Shop Small businesses and spend $10 or more, will get $5 back, up to five times1.

New Zealand is a nation of small businesses with more than 500,0002 across the country representing 97 per cent of all businesses. They contribute more than a quarter of the nation’s GDP and account for almost 30 per cent of total employment in Aotearoa.3

Rob Bourne, Country Manager American Express New Zealand, said Shop Small aims to celebrate local business and the important contributions they make to their local communities.

“Small businesses have an important role to play in our local communities and our overall economy, thanks to their contribution to national GDP and the huge number of New Zealanders they employ,”
Bourne said.

“American Express is proud to back small business in New Zealand and we want to encourage all
Kiwis to get out and support them – whether that’s through buying a cup of coffee or a pair of shoes,
every litle bit counts.”
