Doing Good for our teachers and nurses

After over two years of Covid, we’re all feeling completely over it – but none more so than the people who have been teaching our kids and caring for us and our loved ones during that time: teachers and nurses.

The Good magazine team wanted to bring some joy into readers everyday lives and give something “good” back to nurses and teachers, so together they hatched an action plan.

Good approached a selection of schools and the Waitemata DHB with the offer of 400 free, six-month subscriptions (in total) to give away to those who have been giving their all for us.

“We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of a break and a good read over a cuppa than our nurses and teachers,” says SCG Editorial Director (lifestyle) Sarah Tuck. “I reckon Good will provide the perfect pick-me-up with mood-boosting content perfectly targeted at easing stress.”

The latest issue of Good is designed to bring a little respite from the constant pressure, with a theme of finding happiness in a stressful world. We examine happiness and the many ways in which we can bring a little more joy and contentment in our lives – from taking a break from social media, to practising self-care (and trialling some celeb rituals to see if they’re credible or crazy!), to the proven fundamentals such as staying active and socially connected. Looking after ourselves from the inside out, we whip up five gut-friendly recipes and even take a look at how to keep our pets happy – seems like dogs are missing us while cats are desperate for alone time! Lynda Hallinan shares her love of gardening, and we get crafty with paint and mirror projects.

Anna Ricketts at Well Foundation says it couldn’t be more timely.

“Since Covid arrived two years ago, it has been challenging for everyone but in particular for our frontline health staff during the Omicron surge over the last seven to eight months. We have seen a real increase in interest in wellbeing and mindfulness information, activities and ways of de-stressing etc. So this magazine will be of interest to many of our staff and a great opportunity to take a break even if only for five minutes.”
