DAN brings Central Otago township in from the cold

Ophir is a small Central Otago village with around 50 hardy souls. It has the record for notching up the the second coldest official temperature in New Zealand, at -21.6 degrees Celsius. Which is why in 2011, German insulation manufacturer Knauf embarked on a year-long project to insulate the entire town to promote its Earthwool product in New Zealand.

Two years on, the folks at Digital Arts Network (DAN) have whipped up a a little visual treat to show off the transformation, in glorious HTML5. The Town That Came in from the Cold website is packed full of parallax effects and CSS animations. By scrolling down the page, the user controls a Knauf installer’s truck as it travels through he sleepy village past verdant fields, bleating sheep and some of the newly insulated houses – all the while exploring the stories of the townspeople through video clips.

The pretty HTML5 effects work well on desktops, but are messy on iPhones and iPads – because Apple’s Mobile Safari browser doesn’t support parallax effects the same way a desktop browser does.

Information on different types of insulation and where insulation is required in a home or business is also presented, with outgoing links to energy efficiency sites.
