A children’s book for adults

Attempting to get privileged Americans to relate to children living in poverty or danger can be difficult, so Youth Ambassadors is trying a new approach by letting the children do the talking.

The campaign features the stories of three children, who faced drug abuse, violence and hunger and have been written and told in their own words.

The stories were then given illustrations and put into a book called ‘Welcome to my Neighbourhood’, but just because it’s written by children does not mean it’s for children. One of the children talks about their big brothers who are in prison for robbing a bank and murder and another child talks about how their stepfather beat their sister.

The book was distributed to policy makers, funders and media outlets and the supporting videos have been shared across social media.
