2020 Election Night coverage round-up

Kiwis across the nation tuned in to their screen of choice on Saturday night to watch the election unfold – here’s how the coverage played out for TVNZ 1, Newshub, Stuff and NZME.

TVNZ:

1.4 million people tuned into TVNZ 1 to see the 2020 General Election results unfold. An average audience of 530,600 viewers was recorded on the night too, demonstrating New Zealanders’ high engagement with politics this year and their keenness to stick with the 1 NEWS team right up until midnight.

1 NEWS Vote 20 Election Night Special was New Zealand’s highest reaching and highest rating TV programme on Saturday evening in both key commercial demographics and total audience.

Additionally, TVNZ OnDemand recorded 117,400 live streams for the special broadcast, with another 41,000 streams coming from the 1 NEWS website. 

1 NEWS Vote 20 Election Night Special was fronted in studio by John Campbell, Hilary Barry and Simon Dallow. The 1 NEWS political team led by Jessica Mutch McKay crossed live from party bases around the country. Expert panellists Nikki Kaye, Emma Espiner, Liam Hehir and Morgan Godfery gave their perspectives and analysis throughout the evening.

Newshub: 

In the commercially important 25-54 demographic, Newshub Decision 2020 hit a 7.6 rating and 29.5 percent audience share, reaching 459,100 viewers across the night.

In all people 5+, Newshub Decision 2020 hit a 6.4 rating and 24.6 percent audience share, reaching 1,011,300 viewers across the night.

Newshub’s election coverage also resulted in an additional 35,147 live streams on ThreeNow and 15,665 live streams on the Newshub website and app.

On YouTube, Newshub’s election night coverage is currently trending in the number one spot on YouTube in New Zealand after attracting almost 230,000 views (at least 30 seconds) between live and on demand viewing.

And on Newshub’s Facebook Livestream, the news company has experienced more than 233,000 views (at least three seconds).

Stuff:

On Saturday night, Stuff’s livestream attracted 1.1 million views, with an even bigger audience on Stuff’s live data feed showing the results as they came in.

NZME:

Page views across nzherald.co.nz were 7.2 million for Saturday and 7.9 million for Sunday.
