TVNZ strengthens commercial leadership with two senior appointments

TVNZ has welcomed two senior appointments to its commercial leadership team.

James Butcher has been appointed GM sales, bringing more than 20 years’ experience across media sales and agency leadership roles in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Most recently, Butcher was chief commercial officer at NZME, following his tenure as head of audio, where he led the digital audio strategy and commercialisation of platforms and podcasting. He joins TVNZ on March 9.

“I’m excited to be joining TVNZ at a pivotal time for both the business and the wider media market,” says Butcher.

“TVNZ is one of New Zealand’s most trusted and influential brands, with real momentum behind its digital ambition and a clear vision for 2030. I’m looking forward to working with the team to grow digital, strengthen partnerships across the market and ensure TVNZ continues to lead in Aotearoa’s evolving video landscape.”

Add further depth to the team

In addition, Rebekah Gierlinska has expanded her remit, stepping into the newly created role of GM growth and partnerships.

Gierlinska joined TVNZ in 2025 as head of growth marketing, making a significant impact on TVNZ’s trade presence, helping to drive growth and unlock new commercial opportunities.

She brings deep agency expertise to the role, having previously served as managing director of Hearts & Science New Zealand.

Chief revenue officer Valerie Walshe says the appointments reflect a deliberate and strategic investment in TVNZ’s commercial future.

“These are two exceptional appointments that materially strengthen our revenue leadership. James brings deep commercial acumen and a proven track record of delivering results, while Rebekah has demonstrated outstanding strategic capability and real momentum in driving growth. Together, they add further depth to our team and position TVNZ strongly for the opportunities ahead.”
