After a couple of years in Australia working first at the now defunct Campaign Palace and then as executive creative director at Clemenger BBDO Adelaide, Karl Fleet is back in Auckland and doing some work for Special Group, which is currently bedding in 2degrees.
Fleet told Campaign Brief: “My family moved back to Auckland two months ago. It was time for me to put them first and follow them. I’m proud of the work I did in Australia and looking forward to spending time with them and seeing what challenges pop up next.”
Carolyn Luey, The Radio Network’s group general manager of product and digital has joined the IAB board.
“The Radio Network’s digital platforms are growing significantly, including iHeartRadio, our station websites, mobiles apps and social presence,” she says. “It’s critical to the future of our business from both an audience and client perspective. I’m thrilled to be joining the IAB board because it’s an exciting time in New Zealand as the digital media market is evolving rapidly and I feel I can truly contribute to shaping the interactive advertising market.”
IAB announced new chair, Dan Robertson, Mi9’s (MSN NZ) commercial director, back in June after outgoing chair, Laura Maxwell-Hansen, left Yahoo! NZ for a sales role at the Radio Network. He says the new board reflects industry changes and digital’s growing presence across all major channels. “Change continues apace and appointing new talent from different sectors ensures our team represents digital’s new frontiers.”
Additional new faces to the IAB board over the last six months include Yellow interactive marketing director Evan Lawrey, Yahoo!NZ sales director Louis Niven, Fairfax advertising manager Parris Downey, and Google NZ country manager Tony Keusgen.

Geraldine McBride and Derek Handley have been appointed to the board of Sky.
Victoria University graduate McBride is chief executive and co-founder of MyWave Holdings, a technology and consumer experience business. A former vice-president of Dell, she also had a highly successful career spanning over 17 years at SAP where her growth and transformation roles included president of North America and president of the Asia Pacific Japan region.
Handley is currently the founding chief executive of The B Team, a global non-profit leadership collective and is well-known as the co-founder of The Hyperfactory, one of the first agencies in the world to recognise the power of mobile devices for connecting consumers, brands and mass media. He is also co-founder and chairman of mobile advertising network Snakk Media.
“We are pleased to be adding new and exciting talent to our board,” says chairman Peter Macourt. “Geraldine and Derek bring diversity, energy and expertise to the table as we continue to innovate and entertain millions of New Zealanders everyday.”
Sugar & Partners has bolstered its design and studio capabilities with new hires Gary Butcher and Hamish McArthur.
“Gary’s brilliant at wrangling suits and creatives and Hamish has a resume any agency or designer would love to skite about,” says Damon O’Leary, co-creative director.
Bringing studio and traffic experience from DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi and Ogilvy, Butcher steps in to take the reins of the creative department as creative and studio services manager.
McArthur brings real clout and experience to the craft side of the agency as head of design. He has been freelancing around the country and was previously head of design at Saatchi & Saatchi New York.
“Gaz and Hamish are not just great guys they are bloody great at what they do, we’re very lucky to have them around. Their presence has bolstered our team and added great depth to our offer,” says Dave Nash, co-creative director.
Kevin Akers has moved from head of digital production at DraftFCB to become the general manager at Born Digital.
His appointment will allow Born Digital owner Brett Hancock to spend more time on growing the business both in New Zealand and in Australia.
Twenty plus four
After some good client wins late last year and earlier this year, and an increasing focus on data-driven digital work being developed in-house, four new staff members have joined direct and digital agency Twenty recently.
Three have joined in new roles: Karen Looker as senior account director, Gina Liao as a front end developer to enhance our fast growing in-house digital team and Gandhali Bapat joining the studio as a junior Mac designer. Alongside them, Robert Harrison completes the analytics complement as senior insights analyst.
It has also restructured client services to free up Anthony MacLean to move into a newly created role of strategic planner, reporting into strategy and digital director, Hamish Travers.
Maclean leads the client services team for BMW, Heart Foundation and Liquorland. He worked in marketing for automotive and tourism brands prior to switching agency side.
Looker brings a wealth of data-driven marketing expertise and will look after AA Insurance, AA Life and Heart Foundation. She is a digital and loyalty one-to-one marketing specialist and has spent the last six years with AffinityID and was with AIM Proximity before that.
Liao is a graphic designer turned front-end developer and she prides herself on creating websites with standards-compliant XHTML, CSS, jQuery and her weapon CMS of choice, WordPress. She’s also a master at responsive design, a core requirement for Twenty’s digital offering.
Harrison’s most recent role was with Harmonic Analytics, a New Zealand based data science company, and prior to that he was living in the UK working for Royal Bank of Scotland’s customer insight team in Edinburgh.
Bapat, who completed a BA in Graphic Design at AUT, most recently worked as a designer for APN News & Media in Auckland.
