FCB’s CEO Dan Martin departs

FCB is once again on the hunt for a new chief executive following news of Dan Martin’s departure from the agency.

FCB New Zealand has mutually agreed with Dan Martin, that he will be leaving the agency with immediate effect.

About the departure, Bryan Crawford, chairman of FCB New Zealand, says: “We thank Dan for his contribution as CEO of FCB New Zealand and wish him the best of luck in his next chapter.”

Martin joined the agency in August last year, filling the CEO role left by the Brian van den Hurk, who left in December 2016.

At the time, Crawford said he was pleased to have finalised the long international search with the appointment of Martin.   

“Dan is a focused and energetic leader who has extensive experience in client management and agency operations,” Crawford said. “Working with the deeply experienced FCB New Zealand management team, I know Dan will build on what has made the agency so successful and take the agency to even greater heights.”

The same optimism was shared by Martin, who, when speaking to  NZ Marketing in February this year, said the agency was not chasing growth for growth’s sake, rather it was focused on improving its talent and skills in all departments and growing organically with clients.

However, what’s followed has been a hard year for the agency, with the loss of the Volkswagen account to DDB, Paper Plus to Contagion, and Noel Leeming’s media account. 

The scale of the account losses came to light with news a number of people had been let go from the agency in June.

“Like any advertising agency we are constantly reviewing and adjusting our business in line with client requirements. It is not our policy to comment more specifically about employment matters out of respect for those directly involved,” he said in a statement.

It’s thought FCB’s global CEO was in New Zealand recently and it’s thought Martin has already left. He now joins a number of senior staff who have departed the agency the past year, including Fleur Head and Kamran Kazalbash, formerly managing director and general manager of retail respectively, and Rufus Chuter, managing director of FCB Media. 

The agency has picked up the VTNZ, Samsung and Audi accounts this year.

A recruitment process for a new CEO will commence shortly. 

FCB New Zealand’s management team will continue to lead the agency in the interim.
